Humidifier & Perlite
    #5273762 -

I was wondering if I should use my ultrasonic humidifier along with a layer of perlite on the bottom of my terrarium. I have three 66qt plastic containers that I was going to put 6 cakes in each, unless I can add more without them being cramped. I'm using 1/2 pint jars and I dont want them to get too much humidity. If not perlite, what should I lay the cakes down on? Thanks for your input, I'm new at this if you can't tell.

Here is a picture of my basic setup. It isn't much but I think it will work pretty good. I have a digital timer that is hooked up to the humidifier to prevent it from running all day and a 48" flourescent bulb to tell them where they're going. I also have a thermometer and hygrometer to tell me if I screw up too bad. Any other ideas you have I am open to suggestions.

That looks great, but I would use a coolmist humidifier instead. I think simple setups are just as good. Hand fanning and perlite alone will yield excellent results.

BTW, I can fit 6 cakes into a 12qt container. K.I.S.S.

Very true. Coolmist would be greatly preferred to the ultrasonic because it would take care of your FAE problem. For cakes, extra RH really isn't needed since perlite can easily get you above 95% RH by itself. Nice setup, and good luck.

I thought all ultrasonic humidifiers were cool mist. The one I have is a Honeywell Cool Moisture Humidifier w/ ultrasonic technology. Would this type put fresh air into the terrarium along with humidifing it?

well it acts morel ike a ultrasonic then a coolmist so it will put out a fog real thick fog....i had a ultrasonic cool mist my self, but iut was way to much moisture for a 50 gal terrarium :smile:so i would stick to plain cool mists, disc propelled

There often seems to be some confusion amongst newbies about what a "CoolMist" humidifier is & how it works.

It is a simple inexpensive IMPELLER driven device that picks up water from the container the small quite electric motor sits in, then by use of centrifugal force & very small fan type vanes inside it, mixes very fine droplets of internal water into a flow of air - from an intake on top it, which exhausts out of an outlet.

The result is a flow of moisture laden fresh air. Which is IDEAL for bulk substrate tray fruiting chamber, as it creates a high RH & provides fresh air exchange. Which is a key factor in optimal bulk fruit cultivation.

There are numerous brand names for the device.

Always REMEMBER? it is IMPELLER DRIVEN.

Not evaporative, ultrasonic, nor creates steam, as a "WarmMist" type does.
