The Superbowl: A Pittsburgher's perspective (pics included)

The Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XL last night. The final score was Pittsburgh over Seattle 21-10.

I watched the game at a friend?s house that enjoys a decent view of Pittsburgh. The second that the game was over the city erupted in a spasm of jubilation that I can still barely fathom. Everybody that was in a car at the time honked their horns. Everybody that had fireworks (which was a lot of people) began setting them off. Everybody else just ran outside, started screaming, and began banging on things. Try to imagine an entire city bursting with that kind of spontaneous energy.

My friend tried to call somebody and he got a message over the phone that said, ?all circuits are busy?. We then left to go out to a few bars and the pandemonium that we saw was surreal. There were people in Steelers jerseys running through other people?s yards like marauding Vikings. There were people lined up on every road whipping their Terrible Towels, embracing, and screaming at passing cars. My friend (who was in the passenger seat of my car) rolled down his window and proceeded to high-five people as we passed them. Cars were honking at each other. People were holding their Terrible Towels out of their cars as they drove. It was completely unreal.

We eventually managed to get to an area of town that had some bars. A lot of roads were closed because people were spontaneously congregating on them. We found a parking spot and walked up to large crowd (hundreds of people) that was standing in the middle of the street. People who didn?t even know each other were hugging and shaking hands. I heard that the South Side area of Pittsburgh had thousands of people out in the streets engaging in revelry.

The first bar we went to was completely packed. When I say ?packed? I mean the fire marshal could have come in and shut the place down if he had wanted to. People were incredibly happy and incredibly drunk. There were even girls dancing on top of the bar. After being at the bars for about three hours we then went and crashed at my place. What a night.

2/07/07

Today I went downtown for the Pittsburgh Steelers celebration parade. I?m unsure of the total amount of people at the parade, but I surmise it was at least 50,000. When Hines Ward came through people starting chanting "MVP". I?ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

During the past three days I have drank so much alcohol that I will be needing a liver transplant by the time I'm 35. It's just been one long bender. I have no doubt that if you were to track western Pennsylvania occurrences of cirrhosis, there will be a statistical spike for the year 2006. Also, I have no doubt that many illegitimate children were conceived in the past several days here in the 'Burgh.

WR Reverse Pass for TD----Bitch play
Seattle TD..pass interference.....BULLSHIT
Seattle gets the ball to the 3..... Phantom HOLDING?!?
Troy Poloamalu...1 tackle..please
Big Ben...just a clutch individual.....came up as small as possible in the biggest game.

And once again...Bill Cowher wins a game based on luck, bullshit, and getting the calls.....please.

The Refs must have been payed off or something.......

And any Steeler fan will blindly accept this ring....thinking it is free of controversey...where hands down this will go down in history as the most controversial super bowl ever played.

Guess what? Even when the Steelers were playing their D game in the first two quarters, the Seahawks could only put 3 pts on the board.

My opinion on the calls:

1. Ben got that touchdown.
2. That Seattle TD should not have been taken away. The Hawks should have gotten that.

That interference call was just. he clearly pushed off the defender. that one was obvious as hell.
The holding call was bull shit, but then again most holding calls are bullshit.
The wr pass is a play a ton of teams use and is completely legal, and is only used once in a while to give the elemenet of surprise. A lot of things make up the game and doing what the other team thinks your going to do is a sure way to be stuffed every time.

The most controversial superbowl of all time is a little blown out of proportion. the refs made a couple shitty calls, but they made a whole hell of a lot more shitty calls throughout the playoffs. Plus, refs always make some shitty calls in the super bowl. Every Year.

Even if every single player on the steelers team blew ass and didn't do shit. the seahawks clearly did less than that because they lost. not only did they lose, but their stats were terrible, so there no saying the steelers got lucky. they just played better.

p.s. I really didn't care who won the game, but i have the tendency to route for the under =dog towards the end and i was rooting for the seahawks in the 4 th quarter, but they looked ridiculous trying to pull off some sort of hurry up offense.

Officials were deffinately bias towards Pittsburgh no doubt about it.

Sorry, but Seahawks receiver Darrell Jackson pushed off in the end zone. Did it gain him an advantage? Maybe. Maybe not. All that matters is that the official standing nearby -- a lot closer than John Madden, you or me -- thought so. Instead of a touchdown, Seattle settled for a 3-0 first quarter lead.

Sorry, but Roethlisberger might have broken the plane of the goal line on his second quarter 1-yard TD dive. Or not. That's what matters, right? Not where he landed, but if the ball broke the plane? The play was reviewed and upheld. What else was anyone supposed to do? And while there are no guarantees, if the ball had been spotted just short of the goal line, the Steelers were 100 percent on fourth-and-goals this season.

Sorry, I truly don't know whether Sean Locklear held Clark Haggans on that key fourth quarter call. Even if he didn't, and it was first-and-goal from the Pittsburgh 1, then what? If you can't guarantee Pittsburgh's scoring on fourth-and-inches in the second quarter, you can't guarantee Seattle's scoring on first-and-goal from the 1. Why? Because funny things happen, like the Bettis fumble against Indy. Or Roethlisberger's underthrowing a wide-open Cedrick Wilson against Seattle, costing the Steelers a sure touchdown or a likely field goal (the ball was at the Seahawks' 7). Instead, Kelly Herndon intercepted the crummy pass, returned it 76 yards and Seattle scored three plays later.

No one can deny there were questionable calls during the game. But before Holmgren and Latte Nation start whining about playing "the guys in the striped shirts as well,'' perhaps a history lesson is in order.

The striped shirts didn't cause tight end Jerramy Stevens to drop four passes. The striped shirts didn't cause the Seahawks defense to give up a Steelers first down on a third-and-28 situation (which later led to the Roethlisberger disputed TD). The striped shirts didn't cause the Seahawks defense to give up the longest touchdown run in Super Bowl history. They also didn't cause Etric Pruitt to sprint up from his safety position, only to be fooled by the trick play that resulted in Randle El's 43-yard TD pass to Ward (and by the way, if everyone knows the Steelers like to run gadget plays near midfield, don't you think the Seahawks knew it too?). Or cause Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to throw a killer interception with nearly 11 minutes left in the game and Seattle trailing by only four points.

Enough already with the whining. The Seahawks had their chances. Plenty of them to overcome the Steelers and, if they insist, the refs, too.

If we want to talk about blown calls...how about we bring up the block in the back on Roethlisberger after he threw the interception that was ran back 75 yards....or how about the Stevens incompletion that could have been called a fumble...which James Farrior would have recovered.

you know what you saw on TV? Nothing...you're not an NFL referree...you're a fan...you're not an expert...and just because fat John Madden makes a comment about it....his word is gospel?


If you'd like I can show you links to pictures and video of each "questionable" call....

This has been broken down on many websites....video put up and stills from the game....each showing....The ball crossing the goal line when ben scored. Darrel Jackson pushing off in the endzone...and Clack Haggens getting hooked on the "phantom" holding call

The only reason people are talking about this is because with such an ugly superbowl...the media needs something to ensure it keeps getting viewers, listeners and readers.

I guess I was mostly dissapointed because it really wasn't the greatest game but it was good for a superbowl I will say that. Sometimes I think the refs need to just let the boys play. I don't have a problem with them calling bens questionable touch down a touchdown but at least make it up to the other team by letting them get away with a little something like pushing off. It makes for a better game man. The best Super Bowl in recent history for me was the Pats Vs. Panthers.. I wish the panthers would have went this year.

Rules are Rules...letting calls go would then be bias...you have to call everything you see

change the roles here...say that Darrell Jackson was the defender..and chris hope was the reciever...

its pass interefence...some people just view defensive and offensive pass interference differently...when its not

i fail to see how anyone cannot see the ball crossing the goal line on Ben's touchdown.

I could go either way on the push off call. He did it, but it wasnt a real push. stupid to do it 5 ft from the ref though.

and that reverse pass to ward was perfectly executed. did you see the throw too? Beautiful and right on target.

if it was a conerback pushing off a WR like that....it would be called PI and nobody would argue

defensive backs have the hardest job in football...IMO offensive pass interference isn't called enough.

But i guess when you do it right in front of the ref....they're gonna call it everytime.

IMO the only bad call of the game that adversley affected the seafags was the penalty on hasslebeck after he threw the INT
