Best Anit Virus

Someone told me AVG Free was very good, actually they said it was better than Symantec which I have installed??????

They're all good.

If you already have Symantec, use it. It's very good as well. Just make sure you keep it updated and you should be fine. :thumbup:

the best is f-prot, I've used it for many years, it's a heuristic scanner

symantec is teh devil.. get rid of it.

anything is better than that really. AVG Free is ok I guess.. that's what I have.. but I dont get viruses.. mainly because I take precautions to not getting them. But yeah I would use either AVG free, or Avast. Both will get the jobs done, and won't inject viruses into your system and then find them so that you will think it's working.. like norton will... and they wont hog up enormous system resources either.

in laymans terms, it's a program that makes a lot of guesses as to whats a virus
and whats not, it requires a bit more input from you but it will help you to
become more familliar with your computer, heuristic scanning engines work on the
principle that viruses will usually use certain "tricks" or methods of
infecting, and therefore if a program looks like it might be using those tricks,
there is a possibility that the program is a virus. theres also the possibility
that its not thats where google comes in handy, simply type the file name into
google and it will give results on the file size and if its a file thats had
known infections or known to be a virus

AVG is a very good anti-virus program, well worth the 30 some odd dollars. It's probably the best AV suite going right now. (I know, I sound like an ad.) If you go here you can see an explanation of how it works.

I've used AVG Free for years, and it's caught everything that's been thrown at it. Plus, they update it almost daily. All in all a very good AV!  :thumbup:

I personally use McAfee, it's very solid. Symantec (Nortons) is very solid also, had it for years before switching to McAfee.

AVG is pretty nice. Kaspersky is very good also.

Another top of the line scanner is PC-cillin by Trend Micro

There are so many scanners out there now it's hard to choose one. However as long as you keep your definitions updated you should be fine.

Some other free AntiVirus software:

AntiVir

BitDefender

avast! free edition

ClamAV



There are also a few free online scanners that you can use to double check your PC:

Housecall by Trend Micro

Karspersky Online Virus Scanner

Panda ActiveScan

BitDefender

eTrust

Freedom

Jotti's Malware Scan


I'd keep Symantec and use the free online scanners to double check once a month.

Norton was awful and was a pain in the ass and then installed AVG free and it caught over 200 problems (viruses, worms,trojons etc). I use AVG with spybot and I have been doing good every since.

hahahaha.. my wife tried some online porn finder on my system, it deleted a shit
load of important files and put a couple viruses on it, it searched for files
with certain letter combinations like 'ass' so assets.doc was dumped

fprot is damned good, I'll see if I can get a current copy for you to try out

In my experience, the main advantage of free software like AVG and Avast! is that they act like programs, not "security suites". I absolutely hate the word "suite" when applied to software, it guarantees massive bloat. I want to install the programs I want, and get them to perform the functions I want. You can blow suites up your ass.

Also, uninstalling some of the major security suites can be a bitch. They take over your system and try to act as firewalls, AVs, anti-adware, network guards and system monitors all in one, and as a result integrate themselves heavily with your system.

Get the fuck rid of Symantec and Norton :thumbsup:

Avast! is really pretty good.

it used to be great till late 2003 when they started that bogus shit I forgot something that grc said it wasnt 100% anynoumas any more.
and like mentioned befor it uses a lot of ram. But all winblows progies do windows likes it that way.http://www.kerio.com/ is the best free fire wall fuck its the best paid for one too. I wouldn't use windows with out.
