How can I keep it all warm in this cold room????
    #524089 - 01/18/02 12:56 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everyone, Its been a little while since Ive been on, but Ive been having problems with my cold room. You see I live with some room mates and the only place theyle let me do my mycology stuff is in my room or in the basement. This house is poorly insulkated and my room is the worst when it comes to cold. I checked my temp in my room today and it reads between on average between 62.7low and a 64.3 high with a relative humidity of 54%-61% (very humid! Good!) Ive tried an electric blanket underneath the terrarium but with no avail, plus i think the humidity was too much for theh casings on top the perlite.
My question is, I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to keep a whole terrarium warm without doing harm to my cakes and/or casings? Maybe make a small tent and put a caeramic heater in it that shuts off at the desired temp? I dont know, need your guys help big time. Thanks,

you should try puuting an aquarium heater in a jar of water in the corner of your terraraium. cover the opening tightly with foil to prevent to much humidity. or you can take out the perlite and leave the opening of the jar uncovered. that would supply humididty to your terrarium. works for me.

Do what felix said. Also, insulate your terrarium. If you had your electric blanket draped over your terrarium it would probably keep the heat inside better. You might not even need to turn it on depending on the size of your terrarium and the amount of heat your jar/heater setup is putting out. (That's a very easy way to do it.)
Should work.

I should mention that I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. My room gets fairly cold sometimes, and that's all I had to do. (You might not need the insulation at all, but it's so easy and helps a lot...)

Hi Ulysees. Whats your avg temp now with the heater? I have a rubbernmaid terrarium and wanted to know what you would use for insulation? Blanket? Styrfoam?

I think it would block the light out too much up top and confuse the poor guys with the light on the clear sides...hmmmm, but ill work on the idea a bit and test it out. Like i said to felix, ill let u know whats up later with what u have given me now. Awsome Ideas..THANKS!

PS what wattage heater and what size jar for a 20 gallon terrarium?

Listen to Roadkill, He knows what he's talkin bout, so does felix. I had that prob too and they fixed me up. Sounds like ya got the idea, are u incubating or friuting? Incubating u need no light, actually u want no light, fruitng u want light. I dint know if u knew this just making it clear. But definetly sounds like ur on the right track Good Luck!!!!! Keep us posted on ur progress...

Ya, if you're using external light it wouldn't work too well to cover it with a blanket. I'm using a light on the inside, so it's not a concern... Covering it with a blanket has helped me a lot with my condensation problem as well.
My average temps are very stable at whatever I want them at. You just adjust the heater and you can go from very low to very warm... I'm at 82 F right now, I'm incubating. I'll turn it down later on, it just takes a little bit of trial and error. I've got a digital thermo/hygrometer and it saves the highest and lowest temps/humidity, so I know it's very stable.

That's pretty much where my expertise runs out.

Ok, then i just put some foil over the jar right? If I do leave it open, will that take care of the humidity as well for the casings?

Brief Setup specs:
birdseed cakes
20 gal rubbermaid
perlite
50/50 casing tek, 3 inches deep

If you leave the opening uncovered on the Juice bottle with the aquarium heater....you might get 100% humidity.....you can play around with it.
You don't want 100% humidity with casings.
95% humidity for casings.

Oh yeah, I also wanna mention how well this BIONARE hydometre/thermometer works, compared to a industrial one in at a restaurant and was only off by a 2-4% margin for humidity, and arounfd 1-2degrees for temps....it cost me 24.95 at walmart up here in canada, so thatll be like 3$ for all u americans.. thanks for the advice!

I have mine in the closet ( so that I'm not heating the whole room) I found a small space heater made by holmes for 40$ at wallmart, it has a digital temp controll which is more convenient that adjusting a fish tank heater. The fish heater works though if its more convenient for ya. Good Luck :)

I use a cool-mist humidifier, and I am going to try putting a fishtank heater right into the humidifier this weekend, and isnulating it with sprayfoam or rubitex. It remains to be seen if the humid air will still be warm enough by the time it gets to the tank.

Putting everything in a closet with a space heater (or just blowing a space heater on the setup) will probably do the trick, but bear in mind that the space heater will be much less energy efficient. Space heaters run almost constantly and try to heat up all of the room, while aquarium heaters only have to work on the air in the setup. A lot of space heaters run 1200-1500 Watts, compared to a 50 Watt aquarium heater. If you're paying the electric bill, the aquarium heater is the way to go. If it doesn't do the job, you can always add a second one.

Ok, so I picked up a 50w aquarium heater today, put it in a milk bottle and placed it in my setup. After an hour the moisture was pretty good. 80% without perlite. But the temp was still quite low, 14 c .
This is what I think the problem is. I picked up one of the nicer aquarium heater (extra 10$) that shuts off once it gets to the temp u want. Is the one you use constantly going no matter what the temp is? with a high/low setting? Therefor pumping out more heat? If so, let me know. thanks

Hi Northernsoul,

Judging by the temps inside your room/basement, it seems we are both in similar Latitudes. I like low temps in my living space personally. At night I like it around 67*F. In the daytime no more than 70*F.

I don't know how large your friends setup is but I know a person who uses a closet with one (1) 75W incandescant bulb and it keeps the closet a nice, toasty 75*F. (the closet has 113 cubic feet)

On particularly cold days/nights, you might need to add one more of the same but just for a bit.

Of course it depends on if your fruiting or incubating

Hey Ulysees,
I have 2 50watt aqua heaters goin at once, both are set to a minimum boil providing excelent heat (althought still might need some insulation) heats at 68-70degrees and humidity is at a stagering 99%!!! I plan on having a pump running 24/7 to lower the humidity to 92-95% cuz i have casings.
My question to you, and anyone else who sees this is: What can i do about the condensation? Alot is developing on the sides (no prob) but im afraid it might drip from inside lid onto the casing tray.....i have no room in there for a drip shield, any ideas??....plus i have an external light source, so i cant cover the clear lid.....THANKS!

I read a post some time ago that said a
light coat of vaseline on the inside of the
top would prevent condensation from
occuring there. Hope that helps.
Peace.

Vaseline does not work in my experience. It seemed to work for a couple days then no more. Try part of your lid w/ it and see if it makes any difference, no sense in mucking up the whole thing and wasting all the vaseline like I did.. haha
