Best Way to Keep my Jars Warm
    #1975644 - 10/03/03 11:25 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I had inoculated 2 jars a while ago and nothing came from them...i am assuming this is cause i kept them at like 60 degrees. I know that was wrong, but at the time i was just like fuck it, cause i couldn't have a good set up. Well now i am moving!!!! HELLLLL YAAA! so i have my own place now and i want to make a good setup! I was wonder how i should keep my jars warm? Any advice would be great.
also,
"Vermiculite
A soft, spongy volcanic gravel" . mine is not soft or spongy? is that ok, its also smaller pieces. thanks, peace

A good method I use is to put the jars in the cabinet above the oven light and keep the oven light on...the heat from the oven light gets the temp at around 88-90 deg F...

I know its not in the right forum and you could have done some more research but ill tell you anyway.

First get two of the big rubbermaid tubs, im not sure the size but wal marts got damn near a whole isle of em.
Then get a fully submersable fish tank heater.
Now put the heater and some water (youll figure out the amount) in one tub, then put the other tub inside that one, then put the jars into the top tub, and make sure theres always enough water or youll start a fire real good.this is the simplified version but with a little common sense, you can do it, ALL NIGHT LONG!!

As for the verm., you want the stuff thats closer to the size of pea gravel, not the stuff thats almost as small as sand. Maybe not the best comparison, but hey, what can you not do.

i am currently using a cardboard box with my desk lamp aproximatly 4 inches from its side, it keeps the inside at an even 82 degrees which should be good enough for incubation. Also, if you have a mini refrigerator, throw your jars behind it wrapped in a black tshirt. Im testing this right now, but the temperature raise from the heat coils is absolutely perfect so there is no reason it wouldnt work.

One fella on the board is using his water bed to keep his jars toasty.

i've got a closet with an electric heater...no idea where the heater came from, but this 1000watt heater will pretty much give me any temperature I want...especially at this time of the year when its getting cold, now I can really get any temperature I want...but then again, I dunno how pricey it could be, but either way, it works great to control heat in a small room or closet.

Do a tub in tub.

Put a water pump in the bottom to mix things up a bit. This gets a more even heating from all over the incubator rather then most of the heat comming from the bottom.

An incubator is essential. On my first grow I had 12 4 0z jars with PF Tek. I kept them in a kitchen cupboard at about 60-70 degrees. They took forever to colonize. Roughly 5-7 weeks. I got a 65% sucess. With my first rubbermaid incubator I did 12 1 pint jars, PC'ed them and put them in the incubator. The sucess was over 95% and the slowest one incubated in 4.5 weeks. I bet I can get the collonization time down subtantially by using a perlite layer in the bottom and using a PVC pipe in the middle. I saw the tech somewhere in the forums in advanced. First, though, I'm going to try making sure me birdseed has the right moisture content and ammending it w/ adjuncts like cracked corn, rye grain, whole brown rice and a little kelp meal. I want to get my times down like the touted 3 week colonization I've seen on the site. Strain needs to be considered also; and I'm talking B+, cambodian, etc. Fast ones.

Large beer cooler with one of those plug/unplug water drains in the bottom. Take an aquarium heater and cut the plug off, then thread it from inside to outside thru the drain plug. Get a snap-on electrical repair plug and fix the cut end that way. Put the heater in large tea jug. That way you can keep the lid closed but still have it plugged in with it all snug and insulated. Just check it often at first to make sure it's not too hot.

The first thing i ever did was make a tub in tub heater. and it worked great. then i realized that i could just get a 3 dollar electric heater at goodwill. and that worked better.
but now i just put them on top of my hot water heater. its always about 86 degrees. the perfect temperature. and since the heat radiates to the bottom it encourages the bottom to colonize faster, too. it costs no money, and its a dark area! where no one ever goes, so its discreet. put it there, forget about it for two weeks, come back and check it.
