Please help me with my Calculus homework!

How can I put the function:

[e^2y]-[e^-2y]=2x

into a form where y is a funtion of x?

I know it is supposed to end up as ln(x+[x^(2)+1]^(1/2)) but I just don't understand how to get from one to the other...

no, you can't do that because

ln(e^2y + e^-2y) is not the same as ln(e^2y) + ln(e^-2y)

because

ln (e^2y * e^-2y)= ln(e^2y) + ln(e^-2y)

if it was that simple I would've had the answer a long time ago

What section is this in?

It looked like a hyperbolic function to me, so i used u-substitution and got

y= arcsinh x

arcsinh of x = ln(x+sqrt(x^2+1)

I think that is it, no calculus just hyperbolics

no no no. Natural logarithms don't get distributed like scalar numbers do

You have to take the log of the entire right side ( ln(2x)) and also the entire left side (ln(e^.. - e^..)) because 2x= e^.. -e^..

He appears to be using log rules correctly to me.

Im telling you the key is hyperbolic. I already solved it as described above. Use u-substitution (u=2y), and the def. of sinh and arcsinh.

The answer I get is <1,-3/4,-9/16> but that is wrong.
