jeremy narby - the cosmic serpent; DNA and the origins of knowledge
    #5214533 -

first off, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. It probably is, but i honestly don't know which one it should be.

for those of you who are familiar with this book, i have a question.

quoted from the book:

So here are people without electron microscopes who choose, among some 80,000 Amazonian plant species, the leaves of a bush containing a hallucinogenic brain hormone, which they combine with a vine containing substances that inactivate an enzyme of the digestive tract, which would otherwise block the hallucinogenic effect.

It is as if they knew about the molecular properties of plants and the art of combining them, and when one asks them how they know these things, they say their knowledge comes directly from hallucinogenic plants.

How can this be, when they can only know this after they have ingested the right combination?

I'm not sure how to formulate my question but i'm hoping you get the idea. In case there is an answer to this in the book itself, forgive me for having missed it.

Thats the great question, these people were very brave to venture into this unknown place. Can you imagine being the first person to ingest the Yage brew, oh my word, you might die for all you knew. These people had an extremely close connection with the natural world, maybe something pointed them in the right direction.
Possibly during a trip on psilocybin, the shaman comes into contact with a plant diety, during their conversation, information is passed onto the shaman as to the where abouts of a new teacher hidden in the jungle  hahah, who really knows though, thats the fun part, thats the great part, how will we ever know :sun:

BTW, the book is a great read

I have not read the book, but here is my take on it.

The Truth is out there, shining like the sun. The use of drugs merely changes the focus on our perception of the Truth.

This particular combination was likely discovered by trial and error, or another interpretation is that the shaman who discovered it was guided by a spiritual being. It is generally excepted by shamen that an external/eternal force (deity?) guides them to the correct plants.

I think historically people just used trial and error. Obviously the shaman lives and passes knowledge down to new shamans. Also medical plant uses have been collected and documented in a lot of cultures(latin, chinese, native american). I think its all they really had, so they had to be really good at it, and not a lot that we over look because of our fancy technology.
