Who doesn't have a degree
    #5213728 -

And works a job that can support themselves, that you somewhat enjoy?

I'm starting to think college isn't for me. I'm a horticulture course that I decided to try out because I thought it would be interested in. But really I'm always bored in the class and not to interested in learning.

edit: I don't think I'm really not interested in learning, I've just been struggling with anxiety after switching meds and not being outside to much since it's winter. Also a whole new class scheduel....trying to suck it up and get through it.

i don't.

in the IT field, a degree can be a mixed blessing. i have a friend about to graduate with a CS degree from univesity of michigan, and due to oversaturation of the market, he'll probably get stuck with some menial ass job for a few (perhaps many) years. i've got no degree, but was hired and somewhat trained by a friend who owns his own company (he doesn't have a degree either - dropped out after 3 years into an electrical engineering degree) - and while i'm planning to go back to school to get a liberal arts degree, have a quite secure future with my current employer.

I have a degree, but I have a marijuana felony, on my record, so I can't do much with the buisness degree. Ironically, I am about to start back for a horticulture degree. I want to eventually own my own nursery. That's my dream.

I've been debating whether or not to get one. I mean, it is true that there is an oversaturation in the market...so, you will get some mediocre job. But, then again, it could help you.
I've been looking into those online schools, but I don't know the value of those degrees. Plus, all the schools I've seen online, have pretty boring degrees that I know I wouldn't be interested in...tough choice.

I have a degree. I also have felony that makes getting a job a good job tough, even if I explain to them I put a kid that raped my sister in the hospital for a month. Many companies have policies against hiring felons of any kind. Of course that kid did less time than me.

Anyways I work for myself as a sole proprietor doing lawn work, odd jobs, misc.

Good money, set your own hours, and low start up costs.

No degree. And i started a company with a couple of friends (programming/custom solutions) and were doing great.

What ever you do you will always end up working your ass off to get your pay with or without degree.

It seems, but I could be wrong; that even a bachelors degree doesnt mean much anymore. As in just a bachelors degree. They tell us that if we join clubs, and do extra work that it will mean more.

I havent yet.

Life is about self-sacrifice. You don't just quit when shit gets tough. Stick with it and get your degree.

You should just find a different course of study bellylard.

Degrees don't mean much anymore. I mean, way back when it could have, since the majority of the population didn't go to college. But, now anyone can get a degree...so, employers are starting to doubt the integrity of those degrees.

Exactly. I want a degree where I can enjoy my field of work. I don't want to wake up every morning and dread going to my job.

Exactly. I find it hard to believe an individual isn't interested in any fields of study. He was speaking of giving in and quiting. He wasn't talking about switching his field of study. I think there's an field of interest for anyone out there.

You couldn't be more wrong. Degrees are becoming more and more important, especially amidst the contemporary back-set of outsourcing and such. I highly recommend you read The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman.

I like to mix self sacrifice with self indulgence. It makes for a happy medium.

i'd second that recommendation for Friedman's book..

unfortunately (well, for white-collar americans, that is) with a sub-standard public education system, and a population that has grown accoustomed to having certain things (and thus wont work as hard as a hungry growing population), it seems america is on a slippery slope towards losing a grip over the professional class

A degree helps, but it no longer gaurantee's a great job. Even those working on their own could possibly be doing better with a degree, and the vice versa can also be true. The path without a degree is no doubt much harder unless you have a personal skill which you excel. For example an electrician or even to a small degree IT, most companies want degrees for IT smaller companies will work around it. My friend who is an electrician makes 120k a year w/o a degree but he is damn good and works 60 hour work weeks. If you have no skills and no degree, good luck in making any kind of real cash
