(the same) broken cake
    #514160 - 01/08/02 08:27 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Some days ago i posted a question ('broken cake'). What happened was that as i was birthing a cake it fell to the terrarium floor and broke in half. I just piled the two halfs as they were before. 24 hours after that the pins on the cake had grown a bit. However the next day i had no growth. Bacause of that i posted the message and had a reply that said that it was probably nothing to worry about as it was only 1 day without growth. Now it's been 3 or 4 days and the pins are exactly the same size they were when i posted the message (and none of their caps became black as they supposedly do when the shrooms abhort). The terrarium is well humididfied and i fan it 3-4 times a day. What should i do? Maybe remove the pins and case the cake?

casing is always a good solution.. and if you really want the mycelium to recover quickly, throw the cake in a blender instead of crumbling it for the casing spawn layer... you'll be nicely surprised.

Does that apply to rye grain cakes also?

well.. I've heard that busting up whole grains in the blender will cause mass contams.. so better to crumble.. but I have never tried this to see.. though on thing you could do in the future is use the blender on the whole grains before making the substrate, then you can use a blender to make your casings. By the way, using a blender on cakes to make casings causes them to form a very solid strong network in 3-5 days... it's like a big ass block of mycelium that doesn't really have a chance to get contaminated because it regenerates so quickly.

put a cake in the blender? I have asked a question on a previous post about that. Most replys said not to put it in the blender. what are the advantages of blending a cake before casing as to crumbling?

it colonzies faster and stronger with less chance of contamination because of such quick recovery.. each little piece becomes a growth point.

The reason you can get away with putting flour/verm cakes ina blender and chopping htem very fine is because there is nothing that the Mycelium hasnt colonized that can really introduce contams (due to the fact you are using flour and not whole grains) but larger and harder grains like rye will not have inside of the kernals colonized like the inside of a cake would be. so by throwing that ryein the blender you are exposing a lot of uncolonized surface area that is full of nutrients, which wouldnt be a bad thing except that the contams will get to it first most of the time.

peace, ar393
