Proper moisture content for cracked corn??
    #5111591 -

Hey guys, just wondering if there is a better way to estimate the proper moisture content for cracked corn. It seems like, even if i drain it real well, and the corn is only moist, i still end up with excess moisture on the bottom of the jar in about a day or so. Should it be somewhat hard to the touch, but you can cut it apart with a fingernail fairly easily, does that sound about right? The teks i read says when if forms a film, but that doesnt tell me if its too wet, just when it becomes wet enough, so if its too wet it will still have a film. If that makes sense, and anyone can give me a hand, id appreciate it. Thanks.

Cracked corn is good stuff. Simmer or steep it for 20-30 mins. Then rinse it really well with cold water. Drain it for 45 mins. Then put the drained corn in a big pot. Add 1 quart of dry vermiculite per 7 quarts of simmered corn. Mix it very well with the corn, making sure all the corn has a little bit of verm coated on it. Then load the jars and pc 15 psi for 90 mins.

Thats what i did last time, cooked it at a low temp in a pot for about 30mins or so but i didnt drain it quite that long after rinsing, maybe thats the problem, im making more tonight so ill give it a try thanks. BTW, cracked corn is great, colonized faster than anything ive seen, using it with Koh Samui so im thinkin i may have some record breaking colonization times if all is right:)

When you drain the grain do you do the up down g- force trick to help the drain get the water out faster? Also you could put the grain in a big cake pan and put it in the oven at 200 degrees. Stir it allot and don't cook it. You want to make sure that the grain is as full as possible with water, but absolutely no excess water on the outside of the grain. By getting it hot and stirring it you are vaporizing the water on the grain and making it release into the atmosphere, ridding the grain of excess moisture.

50% water by weight is what you want, ggmm has a tek for figuring out what % you are getting your grain to. I love how fast mycelium recovers from a shake on cc. I shake my jars at 10% then they are at 100% in less than 5 days.

both times that I added verm to my cc, the junk wouldnt colonize!

i have a new batch goin in two big bags in the pc'er as I type, and I couldn't drain enough water off, so I came up with the genious idea of adding some whole popcorn.
i threw out the old batch, and simmered some more, but added popcorn so it was like 15% popcorn. And the time it takes to do popcorn is much longer than cracked corn, so i took advantage of this and the result is the outer layers of the popcorn being soaked, and the cracked corn being perfect. Now it's in the pc'er and I believe, that because of the heat, the excess moisture should go into the popcorn and level everything out.
whatever though, Mazatapec strain rips right through overly hydrated CC anyways (to my suprise!).

and remember droptop, you can't fruit from corn!
