Milton Friedman's "Free To Choose"
    #5107628 -

I've just finished watching it, and may have to change my mind about a few things. He brought up way too many good points.

If anyone is interested, you can get the series here:

Don't say that. You'll only encourage him.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

You sure? It works fine for me...

Maybe you need an account on mvgroup to use it, I'm not sure.

This is for the 1990 version of the films, of which there are only 5 (I guess there were 10 from the original 1980 series).

I have never seen the video series. Is it all available online or do they just give you teasers?

He wrote a book by the same name. It became a bestseller. It is personally the best book that I have ever read, and it is the foundation of just about everything I believe about freedom. His book is about economics, politics, philosophy and freedom. The man is my hero. He is a true giant and probably the most important person walking the earth today. I believe that 50 years from now we will still be feeling his impact.

After his book was the rage, he decided to make a series on PBS dedicated to some of the individual chapters. I have heard it was quite popular. A decade later, some people decided to remake 5 of the chapters. I think Arnold did one chapter. I bet it is great stuff.

He started campaigning for school vouchers back in the 50's. He is still working hard at it, and his ideas are just starting to reach a tipping point where they gain major traction.

Some of his work against the drug war is brilliant too, though this particular book had only a few paragraphs on that topic.

I have requested that my library obtain a copy of this video series. I am going to have to check back to see if they have it yet. I want to copy it so that one day I can teach it to my children.

Milton Friedman is the man. He doesn't get involved in politics, backbiting or insults. All he wants to do is win the battle of ideas, and he makes a great case for freedom.

I can't say enough. Everyone here should read that book. Even if you are a diehard lefty, you should at least get an idea of the best that we have to offer.

I registered to that site. Now I have to figure out what I have to do to get a torrent. I am always afraid to download stuff because it might be a virus or some sort of fraud. Where is the best place to get that capability?

Another thing I didn't know from reading your site Trendal, is that the original PBS series was banned in France! That is classic. How can you ban an idea? Wow.

Imagine selling bootlegs of an educational show on the black market. How can you ban something entitled "FREE TO CHOOSE". That is just delicious!!!

"Hey man....check this out....I got some primo shit right here...all original PBS documentaries, best shit you can get!" :smirk:

As for downloading, what you need is some client software for downloading torrent files. The one I use is called "BitTornado" and works great. Get it here:

http://www.bittornado.com/

Once you have that installed, download the torrent files from the MVGroup web site and save them to a temporary folder on your computer. Then double-click to open them. It should ask you where you want to save the video, so choose that and it should begin downloading fairly soon.

They might go slow to start out, because there aren't many people seeding this particular files, but you'll get them eventually. Each file is about 430 MB.

As for viruses, I can almost guarantee that you will not find any viruses on the MVGroup web site. I've been getting documentaries from them for well over a year now, and have never had a problem with anything I find on their site!

Yes, I would personally like to know exactly what trendal considers himself to have been "wrong" about.

Suffice it to say that I find myself a little more towards the "fiscally conservative" side of things than I once was.

I figured as much. This is why I was looking for details. Are you libertarian now? Has he changed your mind on some issues, but not others? If so, which ones?

Thanks for the help. I think that I am trying to download one now, it seems to be slow going, but I got time. I have been waiting to see this series for quite some time, and I have been too cheap to pony up coin at the Idea Channel. Again, thank you for your help. The man is my hero. He may just be the most sensible man that has ever lived.

As far as the "fiscally conservative" aspect, I would like to welcome you with open arms. I consider myself a fiscally conservative libertarian in the Milton Friedman mold. The man makes a great case for freedom.

BANNED IN FRANCE! WOO HOO!

I someday would like to be banned in France. They could probably get me for smuggling in deodorant. Vichey pigfuckers.

i've never seen the movie, but have read the book. i'd say there are some interesting points, definitely. however, just as when one reads Marx, one must look at the historical applications of those ideals in different societies (sometimes positive, sometimes negative) - one must do this with Friedman as well. unfortunately for him, one of the biggest proponents of many of his ideas was Pinochet.

i dunno, to me a philosophy like Friedmans (or any form of libertarianism to an extent) is just silly - to place so much emphasis on the autonomy of the self, when (in my mind) the self doesn't really exist.

definitely always a good idea to read the works of people whom you might not agree with, though...

I don't know if I'd entirely agree on the idea of no self, but I do agree that libertarianism can be taken too far.  Friedman has some great ideas, but you do need to look at how those ideas have panned out.  In the past 6 months or so, I've been coming to realize more and more that the world isn't as black-and-white as I once thought.  Karl Marx may not have gotten it right, but I don't think people like Friedman have either.  Reality must be put before ideology.

I agree. Which is why I support Friedman on terms other than silly Ayn Rand psychobabble and similiar 'objectivist' arguments.

Capitalism promotes growth and wealth of the entire nation, thereby by passing the individual and giving more overall wealth to everybody. No self involved. It also ties in nicely to my idea of fascism and the wonders of a united people ready to give up their non-existent self for the perpetual and endless glory of everyone, or more precisely, ONENESS (TM)
