A Million Little Pieces book...
    #5104392 -

So someone gave me this book for Christmas called A Million Little Pieces by James Frey.

I guess it is about his recovery from drugs. Is this like getting a 12 steps book for Christmas? Has anyone read it, should I read it? Ratings, reviews and comments all welcome.

I bought it for my wife. It's an Oprah's Book Club book...

One step above an intervention as a gift.

Mr. Frey writes like a drugged out whacko. You may enjoy it, but I couldn't finish it.

Mcdoopy: Any motivation for buying it for your wife, other than a good read?

OK I've read the first chapter... So far he is a drugged out lunatic that will do any drug on the face of the earth that looks like he got what was coming. His writing style makes for a quick read.

I ask for books by Hunter ST and on ethnobotinicals and get stuff like this.

i really, really disliked this book..

i heard good things from my gf.. and i know he was all hyped up all over for being like a new burroughs or something... or at least that's how he hyped himself.

for one... the actual writing sucked...

for two.. the story sucked... maybe because i've done a lot of the same stupid shit that he did.. regardless, i thought it was way boring and self inuduldgent.
he was a stupid, spoiled rich kid that didn't know when to stop before he had to stop... the only thing interesting to me were the side stories, even though they were terribly written, too.

read the book.. can't hurt.

Haha, my kid sister bought me the book for Christmas.

I saw "Oprah Book Club" on the cover.

I was thinking Naked Lunch my ass.

Thanks Yos, THC, & daimyo. Your comments were all helpful.

I think I will read it. I only have a trashy fiction novel by Dean Koontz to read otherwise. I bet I can finish the book by like Tuesday no problem.

i thought the same.. but it took me like 3 weeks to read it on my way too and from work on the train and sitting around the house... and a 7hr each way ride on amtrak to VT.

i think it drags.. and you already know basically where the dude is going.

*yawn*

i plan on writing a letter to oprah, telling her that from a cocaine addicts and drug users standpoint.. this book is basically garbage.. i didn't really connect with any of the guys views on addiction.

let me know what you think, though.

I thought it was a pretty good book. I read it quite awhile ago. Its an Oprahs Book Club book now?

Sure, the dude was incredibly fucked up on drugs, but just because his experiences arent your own, doesnt make his any less valid.

OK I'm two chapters deep now. The book is getting repititive already, you learn the character in the first chapter now he is getting a bit predictable. But I am sure he will drop a few suprises.

Yos - I agree, you already know the end in the beginning.

My sister said she read this book and thought I should read it. I wonder if she really thinks my drug usage is comparable to this?

Mr. Frey is a drug-crazed lunatic with underlaying mental problems is what I think so far.

I think people like him writing books in this context makes the general non-drug using public stereotype all drug users as this out-of-control. That is probably why I have this book now.

I own my own business, house, three vehicles and am finicially stable and am about James Frey's age - mid 20's. I find it insulting a family member would give me this book.

So far this book is 3 out of 10.

Usually I hate anything Oprah endorses except the oven french fries my girlfriend makes from her cookbook.

I actually think my sister gave me the book for the very same reason.

I am still reading, there have been some half decent parts.

I still don't know how I feel about recieving this book as a gift.

I like how he brings out the point that alcholics using AA are trading chemical dependence to being dependent on a book and a meeting. They are still really addicted they have just 'converted' their addiction.

But there is still way too much boring rambling, and I think he maybe pretty smart but he is not used to using his brain or something.

Any fucked up junkie with decent writing skills could produce a book like this.

It's funny that we've all been introduced to this book by females, is this the Oprah Book Club presence? or something else? or maybe we're all junkies and need to read it to save ourselves while we can?
