My crapy Gateway computer.
    #498932 - 12/22/01 09:43 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

I bought a 1500 MHz Athlon computer from Gateway. Why does it run like crap? Searching the net is sometimes as slow as hell. My system resources are always low (65% right now w/ AOL running only). I expected a super computer, or at least one I could surf the net with and listen to music on. I just got my XP software. Should I install it? I have limited computer knowledge. If anyone has valueable advise I would appreciate it.

Joshua

It'd be good to know how much RAM you have, and how fast your harddrive is

Browsing the net can be slow if your connection sucks of course. Is anything else slow? What sort of connection do you have?

the speed of your internet connection has very little to do with your computer, don't expect much of a difference between various computers on the same type of connection..
there is very very little reason for you to install windows XP..
the best, best~!, advice i can give you: learn.. pick up books on computers, and read them.. try to do things... do not be afraid of doing something wrong.. so what if you make a mistake? then you learn how to recover.. the first thing you should try is installing a new OS.. dont upgrade, just install it "parallel" to what you have, or even learn how to reformat and reinstall.. it will take you maby a day, a week at most, to get through that.. afterwards, its all easy.. if you reformat, i reccomend at least 2 partitions.. the very least: one for your operating system and programs, and one for your files.. although its worth going farther.. in this order: one for OS, one for HD swapfile (cache), one for all programs, one for files... anyway
good luck

It would help to know what mbd you have, etc..
DMA alleviates the cpu of management duties, and that is the primary benifit..
partitioning.. get out an old dos disk, or make a boot disk and add (if they are not there) fdisk and format..
a mixed swapfile/data partition is ill advised, as fragmentation of the swapfile and other problems can slow your performance..
and i very very strongly reccomend you burn your copy of norton.. it causes far more problems than it fixes, slows your computer to a crawl, and generally is a POS..
Partitioning is really step one with dealing with computers at a mid level (hardware:software wise.. high level being software "give me this" and low level being hardware "move this 4 byte word from this register to this location in memory".. )..

My gateway at 6 months old crashed a couple weeks ago, had to get a new hard drive, atleast they have a good tech support, they help you out fairly good, I would send back that XP garbage, but thats just my opinion, start a thread in off topic you'll get more reply's as to why it sucks ass.

If you can't respond to my threads in a respectful way please don't.

I have talked w/ tech support many times. I received a bad monitor, a bad printer, and the wrong mouse. I have had extensive dialogue w/ tech support. I have gone through msconfig many times. I now run w/ minimal programs in my start menu and my graphics excellerator is at it's lowest setting. My internet connection crashes frequently, and it seems as if other programs not associated w/ the internet crash too frequently. My system resources w/ AOL running are around %65. AOL tells me their software is optimized when my resources are abouve %80. I am frustrated that my brand new computer can't hold it's own weight.

Thank you,
Joshua

Unhook your computer, put it back in the box and take it back to Gateway.. I do tech support for a living & if I had a dime for everytime we had a Gateway computer user call in with it not working properly, I wouldn't have to work
