FreeBSD vs. Linux (or other free unix type systems)
    #4979624 - 11/25/05 10:53 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Any experiences or opinions would be appreciated.

What will I use it for? Ruby on Rails with MySQL on a spare PC for learning and development (and minor hosting) of Ruby on Rails based applications. I used Linux way back when (version 1.X - I think) but I've forgotten all most all shell commands I learned. I will use both KDE and the command line, depending on the need - whatever is easiest or most efficient (from a user's perspective, not CPU usage) for the goal. Any suggestions for certain distributions which will best fit my needs would be appreciated. Please keep in mind that I've been stuck in the windows world for some time, though I do program on mid-range OS400 (nothing like Unix or windows) systems and have dabbled slightly in old main frame apps (back in the Y2K days).

Thanks in advance,
An aging nerd.

in my experience, linux is easier to use as a desktop. i've tried freebsd a couple times, and still have it available on my machine, but i haven't really used it much before getting back into booting linux each time. i think that if you need a machine to do a few fairly simple things, but do them extremely reliably, freebsd is the best choice. if you want something to more easily do all of the things we expect a desktop to do, linux is better.

Well I did some research through google and searched some older threads on Linux & Unix. I decided to check out the Kubuntu distro and download the Live CD (I was leaning towards KDE as a UI). It had problems loading as one of the folders/directories in the iso image was corrupt. I then downloaded the Ubuntu (Gnome UI) live CD iso image. I must say that I am favorably impressed, it started without a hitch, recognized my hardware (except for my raid drives, but I expected this as it required a special driver when I installed XP). It seems like an excellent distro, and I see from their website that IBM has certified it to run DB2. I will probably try the install version and attempt to set up a server in the next few weeks.
