Tracing or Tracking Cell Phone Numbers

Can your cell phone number be traced?

As in; could someone see my number on someone elses cell phone and take that number and find out who I am and where I live?

I have been told that there is no directory for cell phone numbers and yet others insist that any number can be tracked back to the original caller.

A cell phone can be both traced and monitored. The feds would not allow cell phone companies to operate unless there were some provisions for tapping/tracing calls.

Ironically, a cell phone is NOT a telephone. It is a radio transmitter/receiver that is interfaced into the phone system. When you use a cell phone, you are broadcasting your call in all directions, and anyone with the right decoder/receiver can listen to your call if they are within receiving range of your signal. Although land line telephones are super easy to monitor, you at least need physical access to the phone line. About 15 years ago, I modified a radio scanner, by clippimg a single diode, to receive cell phone radio frequencies. Lots of interesting talk could be listened to from the inside of my apartment.

Cell phones get their name 'cell' from the honeycomb cell shaped pattern that cell phone towers make. Computers constantly monitor the phone traffic, and they will switch to the closest cell tower with the strongest signal. The computers easily keep track of all cell phone traffic.

I appreciate the links that you provided, and from what I can gather from them, yes, my number can be traced as long as the tracker wants to spend some cash in obtaining it.

I miss the days when there was no caller ID or anything else like that.

Technology and progress, it all can't be good, can it?
