Breaking your own femur, or even the fibula or tibia, would be so excruciating I don't think most people could do it even if they wanted to. That'd hurt worse than cutting through the cartilage in a joint... Which is what that guy whose arm got pinned did. You'd have to have something sharp and go through the cartilage in the knee to sever off a leg without passing out in the process. I work in the ICU and have seen quite a few broken legs... A femur break can kill you in several ways: fat emboli, hemorrhage, and infection to start with. The lower leg isn't as likely to kill you but apparently hurts like a mofo. Most people who sustain that kind of injury have also passed out either from shock and pain or bloodloss.

Personally, if I'm stuck in this Otter trap and it ony has my ankle, by by foot. If its higher up, right throught the knee. My shirt becomes a turniquet, and then you start praying you can get to someone else to help you.

Don't forget to pack a pocket knife kiddies!

If i had to do it with my teeth, um, I'd might as well die right there... I'd get halfway through, pass out, and die from blood loss or infection.

No human alive could chew off their OWN leg.


Not only is it nearly physically impossible, but if you somehow managed to get a good start, assuming you haven't died yet from blood loss/various other complications, no human would be able to complete the act of snapping bones, ripping nerves, tearing through cartilage, with your own teeth.


Cutting off an arm which has been numbed from decomposition with a pocket knife, albeit extremely hardcore, is very different from chewing off your own leg.


Anyone that says they could is lying.

for the guy that cut his arm off. ok.
it was more around like his wrist area.
he had been there about 2 days stuck waiting for help.
he realized that he couldnt feel pain in his arm and cut threw his wrist, where he then preceded several times to break his bones apart.
this sounds bad, feeling no pain and the urge to survive.
anyways, my swim coach was an avid climber and told our team the whole story.
