Work
    #4919611 -

I have a dilemma. In order to get money and pay for the basic essentials such as food, shelter, transportation, and entertainment, I need to work. I have a little bit saved up in a bank account, but without a source of income that would dwindle fast.

So I work retail. Between school and work and an internship, it takes a lot out of me.

I would much rather not work and be able to enjoy my free time outdoors, read books, contemplate, meditate, dance, drum, listen to music, fly a kite, play with my pets, etc. But I have very little time to do that because of work. I'm not really in a position where I can essentially retire and enjoy the free time, though.

But every minute I'm at work I'm unhappy, thinking about what I could be doing instead, my aching muscles, my tired mind and body, and otherwise how unpleasant it is to do what I do. Can anyone suggest any perspective for me to help me pass the minutes, or reasons why I should continue working, because I'm seriously considering quitting and living off social security for the next 3/4 of a year or so.

Practice breathing meditation or awareness meditation. See how long you can stay focused.

Or if you're not the spiritual type. Think about naked girls. But keep your hands outta yer pants.

Yes, I suppose that would be the best way to improve. I've tried many different forms of walking meditation there in the past, from repeating the various names of Krisha, Rama, etc., to chanting in my head, to quieting my thoughts, but invariably a customer will come along and then I'll have to start all over. It's not an atmosphere that's very conducive to meditation.

hey man this is my area definitely! one month of work recently reminded me how it totally sux.

i dont see a point in working unless you have some goal where u badly need the cash..
you can work in short binges and save cash to support you for longer periouds of unemployment, or live on welfare like i do. i think theres nothing wrong with it.. as long as you keep active doing your thing and not just totally laze around. when you dont go to work or school you have practically all the time in the world to do what u want and maybe find alternative sources of income that dont include wage slavery, its huge challenge though to keep active in city where money is the law. so if you can handle it good luck

You see nothing wrong with making the productive support your indolence? Despite your dig at "wage slavery", you are in fact enslaving others (through your agent, the government) when you use their labor to support your existence.

i was going to suggest you quit because i think free time is important but since you've considered meditation i'll comment on that. you said:

there's a saying that goes "if you can't meditate in a boiler room, you can't meditate." this in my experience is true. this doesn't mean a quiet peaceful place isn't best for beginners though. what it means is that you are going to have to invest some time and effort into learning how to keep your mind quiet and at peace when you are outside of work. then when you go into work with a still focused mind your peace will not be disturbed, even by a customer. but since you said you are so busy with school and work this doesn't seem like it would be that easy for you. i just wanted to point this out because meditation can indeed be a very effective and satisfying way of dealing with work you dont like. for example, i don't work but my spiritual practises are the only thing that allows me to sit quietly and focus in my classes. before i got into spirituality i simply could not focus on a lecture for the life of me.

"... the leech dared to say in public."
ofcourse, given the choices of wage slavery and living on welfare i could argue that my "leeching" is much better for the planet and mankind: the status quo is "leeching" from me my precious time, mindspace, sanity and whole planets well being so ive got no problems using it to my own means.

"You see nothing wrong with making the productive support your indolence? Despite your dig at "wage slavery""
no. here i should make clear distinction between creative work and wage-slavery, ofcourse i work all the time as in i explore culture and life in general, trying to find new more mindful paths so my being is not just laid back "indolence". actually i think its much challenging to actually do something original with all your time.. any fool can go to work or school. and if majority are dumb fucks and keep doing crappy work that they dont like why should i do it?

People enslave themselves with their choices. If you didn't create the system you aren't obliged to it. Unless you agree with the rules forced upon you from birth. Then you need to follow each and every rule.

I work regularly at two different jobs, have two other companies which I do work for sporadically, goto college; and still manage to read 2-4 books at a time, workout every day, chat online, and have time to relax (get high).
I don't get much sleep, though.

Sorry... I can't empathize with your situation.

With my situation? My situation is pretty good. I work 3 days per and slack off all the time, not being productive at all.

Work can be a useful means to an end. However, I'm not sure if that end is right for me. Tim Leary's idea of "dropping out" has really gotten into my head as an ideal, and with every day I seem to want to move out to the country somewhere and start a farm and provide for myself.

That wasn't the social caste I was born into though, so the question I'm struggling with now is should I break out of the caste I was born into or should I do as the Hindus suggest and give it my whole heart (even though it's something I've never particularly enjoyed)?

find a job you like, problem solved.

even if that means living with less luxuries and selling sculptures made from seashells and krazy glue with those little plastic eyes on them.

if retirement is not an option anyways.. then i dont see how you could lose, if it meant you would be happier..

bottom line is, no matter how much you disagree with money, you still need it to survive.

The "status quo"? What, you mean the nature of reality?

The nature of reality and man's relation to it is that human existence must be supported by human effort. That is not open to debate, it's an unalterable fact. All that is left to debate is whose effort supports whose existence. You argue that someone else's effort should support your existence -- hence my accurate use of the word "leech".

Yet you do this on someone else's dime. The "work" you do doesn't support your own existence. Your method of survival is parasitism.

Quote:

In order to support yourself.

From your sneering tone towards those who make your continued existence possible ("any fool", "dumb fucks") it is apparent you evaluate yourself as superior to them ("my precious time") in some way. What way might that be? Do you feel superior because you've managed to sucker them into giving you a free ride; that you've made their "wage slavery" even more grim because they must slave that much harder to support you as well?

Quote:
maybe but its only temporarily so i dont mind, got bigger plans.

Since these bigger plans don't seem to involve productive effort, is it safe to assume you're going to pull off a bank robbery or a jewel heist or something similar? Or just sell crack on street corners?

human beings did not evolve to spend hours and hours doing repetitive tasks as required by today's industrial super-specialization. getting paid a wage to perform a dull robotic task is a very new phenomenon. it is not the way we are meant to live.

you can either find a better way to get money, or begin to distance yourself from the money economy.

i spend very, very little money. i also work for money very little. if you want to spend less time getting paid to be a robot, my advise to you is: ditch consumerism, make things you need yourself on your own time, and live simply and freely.

at the very least go for a different job. retail is an awful way to make money.

lies our culture tells us:

1. hating your job, and dreading mornings and mondays, is normal and something we should all just accept.
2. working as opposed to not working is inherently good.

because everyone is so stuck up with powers that be and the cult of money.

"The "status quo"? What, you mean the nature of reality?"
nah, more like this western system that i live in.

"Then presumably you can, too. Why don't you?"
i want to find out and possibly prove that there are other ways of living that dont include the usual cycle of work-tv-sleep and other cultural norms of being good citizen.

"You argue that someone else's effort should support your existence"
i dont arhue that it should be this way, but since it is this way im just using the opportunity. and you constantly assume that i do no effort, i say that it takes much more effort to be unemployed and constantly figure out how to spend your time well instead of working. its stupid to think that all unemployed do is laze around or get wasted.. actually in our culture thats their job, to scare everyone else into thinking that they are failures and only other option is to be good worker.

"From your sneering tone towards those who make your continued existence possible ("any fool", "dumb fucks") it is apparent you evaluate yourself as superior to them ("my precious time") in some way"
superior- nah. my tone would be the result of continuously being called a leech or such as if its a bad thing. ur the one that started with the nasty tone.. pissed off with ur work?

"Since these bigger plans don't seem to involve productive effort, is it safe to assume you're going to pull off a bank robbery or a jewel heist or something similar?"
you assume alot. being productive doesnt have to include working for the system and may be outside the frame of what is accepted in our culture, actually doing bank robbery could be cool but thats not my plan and i wouldnt have guts for it.

Very well put.

Amen. I'm thinking of just resigning soon and working harder at studying. And waiting until a job that actually interests me comes my way.
