another hike
    #4901788 -

I went hiking recently on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto. If you have a chance to visit Kyoto, it is a nice place to hunt mushrooms because there is a Abies firma forest at the top with huge old confifers (native to Japan), and you can walk through the temple complex without paying if you are on the hiking trail!
This was a shrine at the trail head.

This should be Pleurocybella porrigens.

Last year people started dying after eating these in the northern part of the main island (most but not all were on dialysis). This was a widely eaten mushroom (even sold in grocery stores) so it is thought some kind of change in the environment made it toxic.
This is a psathyrella, maybe piluformis. All you have to do is touch it and it breaks apart.

And an unidentified Marasmius?

And I think I found yet another small gym species not in my guidebook. Growing on deciduous logs. Cap 2cm or so with faint striations in it.

Stalk was solid, but not stringy or tough

Orange spores

If I am right, this will be the fourth gym that I found not in my guide. I am beginning to see how guides are made--having representative species is more impt than having all the common species.
And here was my walk through the Enryakuji temple complex at the top.

I realize these pictures have little to do with mushroom hunting.
And after a long breath-taking descent, I came upon this, halfway up the fricken mountain.

While I know it is important to manage erosion, this wrecked the most picturesque descent down to the lake from the mountain, and someone's pockets got lined when it was made. It was landscaped like Disneyland. If you look at the V-cut where the water will run through, it is not grey concrete but some kind of fieldstone affair.
It had just been completed and the road carefully packed, and I found these coprinus comata popping up. Hardy units they are.

Anyway a few miscellaneous photos.

BTW, I am thinking of making webpage, or blogpage and maybe you can give me some advice as I have never done one before. I want to do three things. 1. Post my hike photos like I just did in series. I would like to be able to post photos to about 200KB like here 2. I have created a folder that includes subfolders for families (at least for Agaricales) where I have been slowing putting my mushrooms. I want to organize them like that somehow for easy reference. 3. I want some kind of set-up where people can stop in with ids. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Maido Wallace, san
:tongue2:
I'm envious about your location! The Kansai region of Japan is very nice. The temples in Kyoto are beautiful, as is the old city of Nara with the giant Budda, and deer park. Himajii castle is well worth a visit too. On my last visit to Himejii, I was picked to try on the samurai armor. It was pretty complex; it took about 20-30 minutes, with 2 helping girls, to correctly put on. I have not yet hunted shrooms in Japan, but hopefully I'll be able to shortly.

I love Japan, I have trouble finding fault with any society that sells Sake (rice wine), Suntory whiskey, Tabaccoo, and 2 liter cans of beer <my favorite!> in vending machines.

My current employer sends me to Kobe/Osaka about once a year or so. I have a great job; I get paid for travel time which is usually paid as overtime for actual flight time. Of course, for international flights, alcohol is free. So I'm getting paid time and a half to drink beer. Sometimes life isn't fair for everybody. I welcome un-fairness in the game of life, of course that only applies when life is unfair in my favor. LOL

As for the webpage or blog or whatever, its a good idea.

I have documented all my hikes for the past 4 years in pictures. I just have them all on my harddrive and quite a few uploaded here to the shroomery.

I would like to make a mini-feild guide for this region of the united states as I have photographed and documented well over 100 mushrooms!

IF you get any ideas plese let me know,
