Of course, some people would say that instead of being a genetic trait it is just because I'm Swedish. Being of 75% Swedish ancestry is like a guarantee for turning into a gloomy morose old man. I mean, look at the Scandinavian mythology - in the end of everything Ragnorak takes place and the entire universe is destroyed - gods, mortals, giants - everything. So what's the point of even living if at some point in time everything will be wiped out? And of course that's exactly what physicists are saying is going to happen to the Universe: In about 20 Billion years from now it's all going to end. So what is the point to the whole thing anyway? LOL!!!! So the old Vikings had it right from the start. All you can hope to do is leave a good-looking corpse and a fairly good reputation which maybe a couple of generations of your descendants will remember you by. After that it's really all just completely and totally irrelevant.

HA! But of course, such thinking is NOT due to my chronic depression... I'm just Swedish...

I agree totally that there are people who are prescribed these medications by the health industry we have today who would probably not really need them. On the other hand I also feel very strongly that there are many people for whom anti-depressant drugs are a miracle - myself included.

I agree and I'm one of those people too. If you haven't been to the abyss, you'd never know what darkness lay there....

I believe that doctors are too quick to prescribe SSRI's, in lieu of really getting to the basis of people's problems, finding alternative cures, etc.

But I also think that there are a substantial number of people who are greatly benefitting from these things. They're not bunk... they inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, maximizing the presence of a neurotransmitter proven to affect mood, sleep, etc.

For some its a crutch, for some its a god-send.

Still... it sucks that SSRI's severely mute rolling/tripping, becuase I think those experiences could have powerful efficacy in easing depression as well.

A lot of times, depression can be avoided, alleviated, and remedied through a healtyh diet.

That's great if you don't have a hardcore chemical imbalance in your head. So Zen of you...so diffuse...so unsupported.

This is indeed true. In fact, there are many ways people can help to overcome chronic depression. However, in some cases these methods just are not enough. It's sort of like saying "you don't need an entheogen to 'get there'... you can do it through meditation or fasting." Catch my drift?

Yeah, you're right. But pills aren't the magical solution themselves. I myself suffered from crippling chronic depression amongst a plethora of temporary psychological dysfunctions in my youth.. and I was able to beat it through sheer will power and changing my mind about things. Pills only ever made it worse, or extended the process, turned me into a chemical zombie with a chemical smile. But that's just my personal experience.

Pills aren't perfect, but they can definitely be effective. There are different causes for depression as well, and sometimes it's more related to your situation and environment than chemical imbalances.

This doesn't mean that the drugs are bullshit, they aren't, there's a lot of solid data backing them up. They won't always work though, and they're often over prescribed. I think they should be a last resort, when other factors and techniques have been exhausted, those are the situations that ARE most likely chemical imbalances.

Just because personal experience tells you they don't work doesn't mean many others don't have positive results. There are many websites out there with information on SSRI and other psychiatric drug research.

Defeating depression with willpower is great. However, what about people who don't have enough willpower? It's easy to say that they should. That's the whole problem, once you've got the willpower to fight depression, you're halfway home.

Emotional disorders can be tricky. You can convince someone that nearly anything is having an effect on them, the placebo effect is huge. That's why double-blind testing is necessary for these things.

All the psychiatric drugs HAVE been tested quite a bit, there's definitely a correlation. I know some websites claim the contrary, but a lot of it is propagandizing for scientology, a religion which is based on some stories L. Ron Hubbard made up about how the brain works. Naturally, these stories aren't exactly that similar to actual facts, so they need to combat any serious research that's being done in order to be taken seriously.
