p2p question #5437673
    #4889491 -

I haven't used any p2p software for the last two years. So I'm asking you, fellow pubbers: What's _the_ program to use these days? (for downloading music)

Thanks in advance, shine on, positive vibes, GD rules etc. ()

Thanks everybody! I've tried bittorrent+thepiratebay before, but I always got an error:can't connect to tracker (all necessary ports were open).

So limewire still works? I had thought it died a long time ago. I'll give it a try.

No limewire client for ubuntu, but I installed gtk-gnutella instead, and it's working.

you're using ubuntu? cool me too

then you need nicotine: http://nicotine.thegraveyard.org
nicotine is the linux soulseek client - download the package from
the site instead of using whats in the repos - it's more up to date.
you should have all the python dependencies with ubuntu
so just extract & run. soulseek/nicotine is the best place for music handsdown.

also, you need to get into bittorrent.
I use bittorrent 4.1.7 ~~> http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=33044&package_id=25125
download the source & then:

Quote:
sudo apt-get install python-wxgtk2.6

and

Quote:
sudo apt-get install libwxgtk2.6-0

extract the .tar.gz package and create a shortcut to bittorrent.py (using the menu editor) or run it from a terminal (python bittorrent.py). how to add that to Firefox? When prompted, point Firefox to the bittorrent.py.

I also recommend dc++
follow these instructions

amule is the linux client for emule.
Others use this & love it - I never got into it much.

My previous (feeble) attempts at using bittorrent were with whatever bittorrent version comes with breezy (3.4.3 I think), and bittornado (the version that's currently in the universe rep.)

Are there significant improvements in 4.1.7?

Thanks for all the info+links, I'll have to try them too.

fairly good, i generally never experience any problems, unless i remove the drive while it is still mounted, then plug it back in, then remove it, then plug it back in, like 10 times in the course of 5 seconds. if i do that it goes all crazy and i have to kill the process

just fine.
I keep all my movies & music

are as high as they should be.
