Atheism
    #4862400 -

Am I the only atheist here? I've been reading some posts in this section, and it seems as though a lot of you believe in spirituality, Buddhism, or some form of Christianity. I don't believe in a god, creator, nor any form of abstract religion. If it cannot be proven, I don't believe it and will refuse to believe it. Been a strong atheist since 13 when I got into computers and started thinking in a logical and scientific manner. I just can't take something as fact when there's no evidence except lack of evidence (such as creationism) to back it up.

So any other freethinkers out there, or am I all alone on this island?

Considering the world has no shortage of atheist who you also share common beliefs with, that makes you no different then others that share common beliefs. Now if you believed in the gliknok, that would be pretty unique from other common beliefs, like atheism.

Sure, throughout the shroomery you will find people like yourself who will only believe what some scientists tell them to believe is so or possible. Not sure how that makes you a free thinker if you limit yourself to what science tells you to think. If you like to think you are a free thinker more then anyone else is, you're entitled too that belief.

Hey, I'm curious why you thought you would find other free thinking atheist who follow science as their sole source of authority for the provable truth in a forum entitled Religion, Mysticism and the Paranormal?

Would that be a logical choice or the result of deductive reasoning to choose this forum to find them in if you were truly looking for them?

Blasphemousnoob said to himself, "Yes, through the scientific method, I deduce that I will most likely find other atheist in a religious mystical paranormal forum."

I can see where your free thinking skills are serving you in your ability to navigate your way to what you are looking for in life .......you go boi! :headbanger:

atheism just means you don't believe in a God, however I do not think it extends to spirituality, because you certainly cannot deny the existence of spirit. Once removed from all ties to religion, the intangible element we all call spirit, soul, ego, it remains something that cannot be detected for it has no weight, smell or matter from scientific tests.

I am also from a computer background and have held an atheist mentality for a little longer than 13 years.. I was almost always an (neutral) atheist but now I am more agnostic as well, because the more you think about it, the more you will realize (or at least I did) that there must exist some things that people just can't understand, much like a born-deaf person explaining moonlight sonata, a blind person describing or better yet: like a bug explaining itself to a human.

I do share many of the same skeptic and scientific views like many other atheist/agnostics but i do like to stay somewhat of a neutral observer in the whole thing rather than claim i know any better than the next man. It may be a huge contradiction, but I don't think so: i am an atheist/agnostic that also believes in spirituality and the existence of things that cannot be explained

I look at the bibles as an attempt to explain the world as best they could at the time and they did a fairly good job considering they knew fuck all and had a poor grasp of the basic laws of physics and such.

I think religion and spirituality are important too. The human brain is still they most powerful processer in the known universe and that's what it seems to naturally do, think about life and the universe. Religion on the other hand is an important regulator people come up with crazy theorys religion brings them all together under one umbrella so we can all get along. At least it should.

Parts of our brain are dedicated to religious thinking, it's not just about magic and spirits it's about getting along with eachother and understanding the world you live in.

that could be debated to the point of absurdity, but certain things still remain such as the knowledge of the stars and mathematics by the ancients that still remain enigmas today, even with our current grasp on the basic laws of physics and such.

its less of a how does x = y, and more of why does x = y in some cases

I'm more "Agnostic" than anything, why? CAUSE WHO THE FUK REALLY KNOWS? lol So I just chalk it up as might or might not, dont know dont care. Plus, if every1 did live by the 10 comandments it would be a better world, maybe not as fun but better ;-)

If you define an atheist by someone who has no beliefs, then i'd consider myself to be one.

But at the same time, I don't deny the possibility of the divine, I just can't pronounce myself on it, so I'm also an Agnostic, because as Mind Ahead said, who really knows?

But I also hate to label myself as anything...words just don't do it for me.

Anyway, there is definitely a mystery to life, and you have to discover this mystical part of existence for yourself. As you may or may not discover, everything is spiritual. Some people don't see it and plunge themselves in a monotonous, boring and normal existence, and others do and perceive life as a curiosity, as an adventure, a journey of self-discovery and of immense beauty.

Kotic, they did have detailed charts of stars. In Ireland they found an ancient chart ploting the moons course around the earth that astounded everyone because they didn't realise ancient Ireland had been that sophisticated. But amazing as their knowlage was for the time their understanding of the stars was limited by todays standards, you have to admit that.

Science has shown us so much more about the workings of things. We have a good grasp of just about everything back to the big bang now (details have to be ironed out) You would be surprised and probably very scared if you knew what sceintists (wrong word to use for them but I can't spell the real names) knew now.

Channel 4 in the UK did some good shows about life and the universe one was about the 10 big questions that still had to be answered and the search for the theory to everything. I wouldn't be surprised if there out on dvd I'd like to see them again I was a tad confused the first time around, their well worth a look.

Off topic? I know, but then that's what something, em..

I guess your next logic will be that schizophrenics hold the 6th sense and are our gatekeepers for contacting outer spirits?

I don't believe messing up your mind nor being born with a messed up mind proves that a higher power does exist. It just proves that the higher power is anyone but you.

Well, I just did without any problems, too.

Well, the demon with 5 huge testicles I'm thinking of right now has no "weight, smell, or matter from scientific tests," so I guess he's real, too? Let's see what other abstract thoughts and characters I can make real as well. Haven't done this since kindergarten.

If you're talking mentality then I guess you could always say I've been atheist since I've never believed in a god. I never really believed in Christianity, but I still thought of myself as a Christian until 13 since both my parents are.

I guess you could call it ignorance on wtf I was since I didn't learn the meaning of what an atheist or atheism was until I read about it online. Then I started using that term to describe my religion instead of Christian.

When we finally do evolve to our fullest and figure out life 100%, the sun will become a black hole and suck up the whole solar system and kill us all. But that's still something to look forward to. Then it doesn't matter what abstract religion or what spirits or demons you believe in since everything you have ever seen, heard, and smelled will be pure energy (including you) waiting to become matter again.

there is a difference. for example, what is the difference between someone 10 seconds before they die, and 10 seconds after they die? They do not change in weight, color, smell, mass or density. You may claim that the difference is the absense of a heartbeat, but there are other people that have had their heart stop, yet were (and are) still living.

You may say its the absense of synaptic transmission of energy/electricity in the brain, but again even if you were to send electricity to someone's brain after they were dead, it would not bring them back to life.

To put it a little easier to swallow: what is consciousness made from? This has nothing to do with atheism, which only refers to the belief in a god, a diety.

Quote:

the best answer atheism can provide is in reference to materialism, which basically describes thought as a property of the physical world, but even in that definition, it remains a property that has no way of measuring with current technology. and even in that event, this "property" of material is not the same as energy, because energy is seperate from material.

Quote:

It's great to hold your own views, but atheism does not provide any answers, it is simply a stance on religion / god. So atheism is a starting place, but unless you are also nihilist, you may want to open your own mind a little bit more as opposed to just declaring with certainty that anything and everything can be explained..

because i am guessing you are not going to be ones of the people that explains any of it.. just the guy that sits in the peanut gallery shouting out opinions.

I believe that it is just as foolish to decide that something does not exist just because you have not personally seen or experienced it as it is to decide that something DOES exist that you have never seen nor experienced.

I also forego labels. I am just one of life's observers, not any kind of -ian or -ist. This keeps the lenses clean.

i dont think calling yourself an ian or an ist makes "the lenses" dirty. it's just stating a current concept you are relating to at the time. of course it can be brought to an extreme where you simply declare yourself an ian or ist, and upon every new addition to the definition, you add that new definition to your beliefs without considering it.

I think it does pollute the lenses because as soon as you accept that label, you are putting a cap on yourself. In other words, whatever defines your definition of what it means to be whatever particular kind of -ist is constantly changing, you "add to the definition" like you said. Therefore an -ist really has no definition at all, and is constantly being jerked back into the focus of the individual like a little girl running along with a ragdoll. Labels simply have no meaning, it is always your conciousness alone which matters in all actuality.

i would argue that you only put a cap on yourself when you put a cap on yourself.

its not from relating to a broad concept which makes explaning certain views easier for others to understand. not everyone you meet is willing to have a 9 hour conversation just so you can make sure they don't think you are a certain ian or ist

So because we are confused and awestruck by the nature of our universe, we should attribute its qualities to a made up character?

In response to the initial post, I am an atheist. This is one of the few labels I am willing to stick on myself.

?I suspect the reason is that most people ... have a residue of feeling that Darwinian evolution isn't quite big enough to explain everything about life. All I can say as a biologist is that the feeling disappears progressively the more you read about and study what is known about life and evolution. I want to add one thing more. The more you understand the significance of evolution, the more you are pushed away from the agnostic position and towards atheism. Complex, statistically improbable things are by their nature more difficult to explain than simple, statistically probable things.?

?An atheist before Darwin could have said, following Hume: "I have no explanation for complex biological design. All I know is that God isn't a good explanation, so we must wait and hope that somebody comes up with a better one." I can't help feeling that such a position, though logically sound, would have left one feeling pretty unsatisfied, and that although atheism might have been logically tenable before Darwin, Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist.? --Richard Dawkins
