Have a quiz before you can ask questions in cultivation & advanced.
    #4853744 -

I was talking about delaying people first post by a week here
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Forum7&Number=4650109
Some had reasonable arguments against it.
What about a simple quiz before you can ask questions in the cultivation and advanced cultivation forums. This would mean really interested people could find answers within a day, rather than wait for my suggested week.

It will also stop beginners going straight to advanced.

The questions asked should be stuff that everybody should know, or would be very worthwhile to know. It will force people to read up a bit and use the search function.

Maybe multiple choice answers to common questions, it could be set up automatically. If they fail the test they can resit it a day or so later.

That sounds hard to implement.

No it doesn't.....everyone is automatically banned from posting in the forum until they pass the quiz.

Good idea.

I understand where you are coming from, but I don't know how well that will work.

Then you will have users that start giving the answers to others, or their friends, so they can post.

I think that will turn more people off to the site than help.

It just goes with the territory.....I have come to terms with myself that some new cultivators are just not going to read, no matter what....that's just the way it is.

If they have people on here that tell them "go research", they will just pop up in IRC on #cultivation asking the same things they can't get answered here. I've seen them pop up in #cultivation even when they do have a thread in the cult forums. Their threads aren't getting answered quick enough in their opinions so they go to #cult. lol....thread is usually only 5 min old or less.

Backupwards started having contests to help promote new users using the search function, which was and is a great idea. But anything outside of that I think will put more people off then help.

Usually people that read the forums a lot will only post right when they have a problem......if they can't get it answered or have to wait a week or even a day to do so, I think they will look for another site where they will get answers.

Don't get me wrong....I agree with everything you are saying because some of the new guys really do need to read, and it would get rid of multiple posts over the same questions, but that would just bring a lot more of them into IRC to get it answered w/out having to take a quiz.

I think the best way to handle this is to have a lot of the more experienced cultivators donate a print or anything to backupward's contests. He has giving away some really good stuff recently, but if that pot gets really big and catches the eyes of the new cultivators, it will be far less of a problem.

We are the ones who have the problems with the new guys reading, so I'm not against giving them stuff to promote it....I think this lies on the experienced cultivators to promote this.

Instead of putting restrictions on them that could turn them off, help promote them researching by giving them free stuff.

This problem could really be reduced by the experienced guys showing some generosity.

Yes, good idea. I've been thinking about the same quiz thing for the PE.

Just a few very simple multiple-choice questions to make sure someone is not going to post another FAQ. And it is lots of fun to take a quiz!

We have some very skilled admins here  . They need new projects like this  :smirk: It doesn't sound that hard to implement to me, but I have no realistic view on that.

What we need:

  • Ban everyone from the forum that has a quiz to gain access.
  • Show a quiz if you want to enter the forum and have no access yet.
  • Unban if more than x answers are correct.

The quiz could change from time to time. If they do get answers from other members I do not see to much of a problem, they are at least communicating, if they are here long enough to have "friends" then they will probably know the answers. If people blatantly posted answers in a list they would be deleted and warned or banned.
I agree with you we need more to promote searching. Some may be turned off the site having to wait. BUT if there wasnt so much clutter of repeat posts we may be able to attract more experienced mycologists to join and post here.

I am not talking of difficult questions like backupwards specific searches. stuff like.

which substrate is usually pastuerised.
PF cakes
Rye grain
Manure

What concentration of sugars is recommended for liquid cultures
20%
4%
15%

There could be a thread where people suggest questions (without giving answers), maybe even a poll to vote for them.

yeah, that's cool if the quiz changed from time to time, should work.

" maybe even a poll to vote for them."

That's how the old message threads on the bbs systems use to work. You had to have people vote for you in order to get into the forums. Had to have a 75% approval rating in votes before you could see the other forums / threads. Before that they had a "general discussion" forum that the new guys were allowed in. People would see how they were in there, and would vote for them based on that.

that's a bit much for here though. The quiz idea seems more practical.

Yes, that's my only problem with this idea. Better a stupid noob in my forum who leaves with good info than the stupid noob outside the forum with bad info. But the quiz can also educate more people. It depends on the quiz and people.

That is a bit much, especially since there are so many new members coming and going these days. Some forums I am a member of have only about 20 members, a few come and go but you get to know the others really well. Newbies are more welcome as they are more of a novelty, as opposed to mostly newbies with a few "old hands".

By the voting I meant people would suggest questions and people would vote on which questions should be in the quiz.
