Cold, Rainy Hike
    #4835932 - 10/21/05 08:04 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

(I posted this in the Outdoors forum, but not many people go there and I'm hoping for suggestions soon, so I'm posting it here)

I'm going to go hiking in the cold and rain tomorrow with a friend. I'm trying to plan out what I can wear so as to avoid getting too wet or cold.

For my feet, I've got polypropalene socks and wool socks and some waterproofed gore-tex boots. Do you think I should wear the poly. socks underneath the wool socks, or the wool socks underneath the poly. socks?

For my legs, I'm not too sure what to wear. I've got a pair of lightweight track-type pants that are 100% polyester exterior, with the lining being 100% nylon on the lower half and 100% polyester for the upper half. However, I have doubts as to how warm that will keep me. If I'm hiking, do you think that it will keep me warm, or do you think I should wear another layer, such as jeans?

For my upper body, I'm going to wear layers...t-shirt under a sweatshirt under a fall jacket under a lightweight compressable rain coat (and I'm bringing a poncho in case the rain gets heavy).

For my head I've got a wool beanie, though that won't keep me dry, so I'm not too sure what to do there.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

put the poly socks under the wool ones.

about the layered pants... you can always take layers off, but you can't put them on if you don't have them.

as for the head, i haven't a clue.  i've only been hunting in the snow and a knit hat has kept me reasonably dry.  never been rained on that i can remember.

i was actually thinking about going hiking tomorrow too.  i've had the urge to do so for quite some time.

good luck and have fun.

If you're looking to stay dry you should really consider some frogg toggs.. lightweight and completely waterproof/breatheable. I'm getting some myself..
Those should keep you dry down to your feet in a downpour
Jeans I would skip if you are thinking about getting wet.. unless they are not cotton. COtton BAD.

Check em out - http://www.froggtoggs.com/proaction.htm

From what I understand, feet are almost impossible to keep dry in the wet outdoors. It's inevitable. Just a matter of how long.. and that you make an attempt to dry them at night or have dry ones to change into. But that's more for long term hiking. Having a pair of waterproofed gor-tex books and silk and poly socks you are already ahead of the game. Just bring an extra pair in case.

You should stay pretty warm with what you have. In fact if your rain jacket is not breatheable I would imagine your problem will be cooling down and sweating.. but bring an extra layer just in case.

haha. i used to see frogg toggs on television.

those people looked pretty goofy wearing them but then again, the outdoors is not a fashion show, eh?

Very cool man. I'll have to check out those Frogg Toggs. As it is, I'll have to stick with what I've got, since I won't have time in the morning, but I'll stop by my work and see if they have anything similar.

BTW...any new thoughts on the gathering?

I don't think REI sells Frogg Toggs..
And the elite and fisherman frogg toggs look pretty goofy.. but the Pro Action Suit is straight.
