shroomisn that was a fantabular post. Comprehensive post, I usually just grab my shit and go, never could have wrote out a list like that. I also have never been on a journey longer than two weeks.
I was only kidding about the wookies and withces, in my part of the country you have some real worry with bears though. All the witches I have ver met have been more like druid preist or preistesses, all cool as hell and very much going to see to your needs while in their company.
I usually carry a firearm with enough kick to drive away a small bear. They only weigh four pounds, you shouldn't need a whole lot of bullets.

you also gonna need a good whistle, and that should about cover it.
Whistle in case of emergencies, if you get hurt or whatever.

since you are currently in the UK it makes sense that you start with a few trips here. in the UK NEVER EVER EVER even think about carrying a firearm!! this should be an obvious thing to say to a UK resident but since there has been so much advice suggesting carrying a gun i thought i whould mention it. there is no need to carry a gun here (absolutley no dangerous animals at all and hunting needs specific permits). if you are seen carrying a firearm (of any description) it will raise eyebrows to say the least, if you are seen carrying a handgun the cops WILL be called since handguns are illegal!!! many people would seriously consider calling the authorities if an individual is seen carrying any type of gun. it is a highly suspicious thing to do in the UK. if you dont have the appropriate licence (highly unlikely given your question) you run an extremely high risk of arrest. i realise our american cousins are a bit more keen on guns then we are, but things really are different here folks! in any case unless you have some very dodgy mates i suspect you wouldnt be able to get hold of a gun anyhow.
as for where to go, scotland is a great place to start. there are now legally enshrined rights to walk, hike and freecamp pretty much anywhere there outside of built up areas which isnt somebodies garden. this applies to all land, including privately owned land. http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com http://walking.visitscotland.com/walks/
in england and wales there is a right to roam over large parts of open countryside http://www.ramblers.org.uk/freedom/ but there is no corresponding right to freecamp. tho its fair to say that in the more remote parts (eg mountainous bits - lake district and mid to north wales) freecamping is easy enough. i have freecamped extensively throughout the UK and have never yet had any trouble. a little common sense goes a long way.
