Liberty cap color variation + pan subbs
    #4826666 -

Here is a portion of my pickings today.

Notice how the liberty caps (the mushrooms on top) vary in color quite a bit. At first, I was doubtful that the ones on the far right were actually libertys. They have light gills and are a different shade of color. They were growing in the same habitat as the rest though, and they do have a separable pellicle.

The pan subbs are on the bottom of the image. They vary in color quite a bit also.

Here are some close ups of the libertys on the right.

Have a great day!

The Libs on the right: You mentioned that you did not know if they were Libs, at first, or not.

Oddly, the Libs I have found all look most like those.

It's odd how many very different looks they have. I would think they would be classified as completely different species of Psilocybe.

Nice post.

This is depressingly true yet not really depressing it's just confusing actually lol. Some libs look like dung-loving mushies cuz the gills show and their brittle at times. Then theres a thicker different color lib every time and OMG.

Im not an expert but there is a few species that closely resemble the liberty cap in both appearance and habitat. Your mystery mushroom could be p. subfimetaria.

are the mushies that closely resemble the lib cap deadly or poisonious? Stamets book says its extremely easy to diferentiate libs from nething else

There are some poisonios look-a-likes but once you've picked liberty caps a few times you should have no trouble (just check every mushroom before you bag it). Psilocybe strictipes and psilocybe subfimetaria are both magic mushrooms that look very similar to liberty caps, hope that clears it up

alright sweet that helps, so as long as they look somewhat like the descriptions and pictures they shouldnt be nething else, well maybe some other sort of psilocybe species, but im not worried about that, just worried about the poisonious kinds :smile:just as long as there are no obvious differences, i find myself picking them and picking about 50 then just being like, im not completely SURE there are so many that look so close to libs, but from what ive read, there arent ne poisonious ones that could be easily mistaken. Whoa, all the libs or psilocybes that resemble libs i picked have a WHITE sporeprint, wtf is up with this. They look basically identical to the ones in the top right of the first posters pic. But they dont have an incurved margin, its outcurved, and a rounded nipple on the top. Could it be a different strain or somethin?
