Hey...My pet lizards best friends Hedgehogs mites brother is trying out the 50/50 verm/peatmoss tek tonight. He has yet to see a containter that is the required 4 to 5 inches in depth. Is it actually necessary to have that thick of a casing or can it be cut down?? Also do those cheap aluminum baking trays work for casing or does the metal cause problems? Please let me know ASAP as he wants to do this tonight...finally how do you steralize the peat moss properly without a pressure cooker? thanks again

I use what I call plastic shoeboxes. They are available at your local Wal-K-Mart in the Rubbermaid section. They are about 3-4 inches high and the size of a shoebox. They cost about a buck a piece, and can be used again and again. Spray them down with Lysol or wipe them down with a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol, to get rid of any contamination that may be living in the boxes. The casing does not have to be as thick as you mentioned, it can be thinner. As for the metal baking trays, I've never used them, so I can't comment on them. You can sterilize your peat moss by placing it in a pillowcase, tie the open end, and place it in a pot of boiling water with a lid on it for about 45 minutes. Squeeze the excess water out (after it cools down, of course) If you have any other questions, post them, I should be on line for another hour or so... -Grimey

Both the bottom and top layer should be saturated with water. I guess the best way to put it is that they should be moist, but not dripping, if that makes sense to you. If you have any other questions, I'll be on for another 45 minutes or so... Grimey

One other thing, I would sterilize your vermiculite the same way you do the peat moss. I know vermiculite is an inert substance, but I have had contamination in my vermiculite in the past. It's always better to be safe than sorry. -Grimey

I use the cheap tin pans found at grocery stores. They are cheap and reusable as long as you treat them right. They're the size of a meatloaf and 4 fit nicely across the bottom of a 10 gal tank.

Twice daily sprays, plus an inch of water at the bottom of the tank. Did 10 quart jars and filled 16 trays. Lost 1 jar. The quarts took almost a month to get to 100% but I netted so much substrate that the layer in the tins was almost 2 inches thick. I have four tanks and after a single flush got almost 3 ounces dry. Second flush well under way and it looks even better than the first. Check out my original post for more info....
