I was thinking of ordering from Ethnogarden Botanicals, since it's a Canadian company.

After entering my order into the form, this is what their website told me:

1 foot San Pedro Cutting: $32.00
Shipping (Xpresspost): $53.81
Total (with tax): $88.05

Now lets think for a second.

The cutting and package together are around 5 lbs.

The cutting is one foot long. 3 inches thick.

Let's say your package is 16'' by 8'' by 8''.

Using the free postage calculator at Canada Post, and entering their address and mine into the calculator, as well as the above measurements and weight, the total cost for Xpresspost was $27.14.

That is for a personal package. There are business options for Xpresspost, and if that company does a lot of shipping the cost is likely to be FURTHER reduced.

So why is the shipping cost so high?

I did some experimentation with various items and shipping costs from their site. In every case the cost was significantly more than what the Xpresspost calculator was showing me.

Is there something I'm not considering here? Seems pretty shady to me.

I wouldn't buy anything from that vendor, unless u selected the wrong shipping method by accident.

Both those places have reasonable shipping costs. BBB is definately the cheapest for San Pedro ($10 to canada).

As for Ethnogarden, it is a bit strange what they are charging I think. Even Fred's Magic Garden only changes 5$ per cutting, a bit of a difference from $50.

It is rather bizarre. :confused:

EDIT: 2cm (half inch) peyote button: $22, shipping: $30.05
Stay clear of this company (Ethnogarden Botanicals). They are subsidizing the "deals" with outrageous shipping costs. No Fucking Way a tiny bare-root peyote button costs $30 to ship, from Canada to Canada. No Fucking way.

yea they are a rip off on pretty much everthign they sell. think there in cahoots with urbanshaman and that rene chick thats always causing a hoo ha. she is also teh suppliers of some head shops here who alos charge way to much. they charged a dollar a seeds for yopo. just as a example. sorry for the rant im doen now

excpt they arent subsidizing the cost of anything, I bought 5 for about that same price, shipping from EU was only $15

"Shipping and handling" can be such a scam. For instance, do a search on eBay for glow sticks and you will see them being offered for 1 cent with $35 shipping and handling.

When purchasing products online, it's extremely important to compare prices after shipping costs are added. Online vendors complain about abandoned shopping carts, but it's their own fault for trying to rip people off.

if they are attempting to overcharge on shipping to pad their profits, and are claiming shipping costs to be larger than they really are, then they are committing:
~Purgery
~Mail Fraud
~Being assholes

Of course that would be in US law, but canadian laws are not all too much different in many areas from US law. At least they aren't from what I know. You could in theory actually get them shut down so they stop robbing the ignorant.

they are not overcharging shipping, its overcharging "handling" which is basically a bullshit charge to begin with, which results in a loophole in your "purgery/mail fraud"

Not it isn't purgery or mail fraud or anything like that, it is just plain greediness in my opinion.

The "head" guy, Jason something or other, spammed all the drug boards a few months ago. He said that the website now was linked to Canada Post and all you needed was your zip code and it would create a shipping cost unique to you.

The implication was that the cost was taken directly from Canada Post, which is bullshit. However you wouldn't know that until you enter all your information into the website--after filling your cart.

There is other obvious bullshit, for example:

When I order one pereskiopsis cutting the shipping is $18. When I order two pereskiopsis cuttings the shipping jumps to $31. Why couldn't they put both cuttings TOGETHER and ship it for $18 (even though $18 is way to much for a 10cm unrooted cutting).

Btw, the cutting itself is $11. So you're paying over 30 bucks with taxes... for a stick.

It is so ridiculous that I can get things shipped from Europe for less than what they are charging.

well obviously, don't buy from them. But were I you, being the sort of fellow that likes to poke and prod at the dregs of society and remind them of their lowly status, I would write a stern e-mail informing them that the public is aware of their lying attempts to grossly overcharge, and inform them that you intend to tell others of their horrible prices, which you have.

It might not accomplish anything, but it will remind them that they are assholes. And it might make them a little nervous for a few minutes as they contemplate the reality of their business failing due to noncompetitive pricing. I recommend linking shroomery sponsors who sell the same or similar merchandise, inside of this thread.
