Cheaper Prices at 'Guitarget'

couple things to keep in mind when you are at your local guitar center.

1. They enter into HUGE licensing agreements with manufacturer's meaning they get their stock WAAAY cheaper than the local places (a personal version of Photo-shop would cost you 700+ bucks, do you think businesses pay that price for 1000 copies of it? fuck no, the same applies to ordering 1 guitar or 10,000).

2. Because their cost is so low their making a mint off of you when they charge 799 bucks for a guitar they paid 450 for. A 20-30% average profit margin (15-25 for pro audio, 30-50 for accessories, and 20-30 for drums)is INSANE, your local grocery, hardware, & pharmacy stores probably makes a 2-3% profit.

3. Most of the people they hire are inexperienced kids who don't know that much about the gear. Why do they do this? Because they don't have to pay out a commission for an inexperienced kid who doesn't have at least $20,000 in sales every month. After three months that kid gets fired for poor sales and is replaced.(I worked in one in Miami, and the sales ranker since store opening which was 8 years ago had over 300 employees. Terrible turnover rate). The people who do well and work with GC for many years (including some of the higher up corporate folk) are ex-car salesmen. Those salesmen know how to part you from your money with the most profit, they lie and cheat to close a deal.

4. All their in store rebates are bogus ex. Marshall mode four $1200 before clearance, during clearance the mode-four is selling for $1600 with a $400 in store rebate. This happens all the time, they just change tags (not prices) and pull marketing gimmicks to financially sodomize you.

5. They scream about guaranteed lowest price (GLP), and how they beat any other store's prices. But they are reluctant as hell to honor this, or deny you of it because of some sort of weasel clause that GLP has.

6. Used gear...This is the most important thing you should ever know...never ever under any circumstance do you sell your gear to them...NEVER, you will be sorry if you do...ex: I watched a banged and beat up Roswell Rhoads get bought by GC for 50 bucks!!! When it was put up on their used wall, it went for a non-negotiable $699 meaning if sold they just made a 1300% profit on the piece!!!! Profit on their used gear is at least 100%.

When you go to a local music shop their price for a guitar might be 25-50 more than 'guitarget' i know this isn't always the case sometimes it is a bit more. But that shop didn't buy 10,000 guitars of the same model, so they ended up paying the 'Guitarget' price from the manufacturer. Ex GC guitar $800, Ed & John's Music Pit price for the same guitar $845. Based on what we have learned so far the music pit is obviously making a fair and reasonable profit, its usually in the range of 5-7% (this isn't always the rule just a guide line). Explain this to the salesman at 'GC' and he may laugh at you and not sell to you for a fair 5% profit. Just hit up another sales person with the same thing, if it doesn't work simply explain that if wont you'll buy it from the local place that does charge a fair profit, and walk yourself out. Buy the gear at the local place, go back to 'guitarget' and show the gear to the salesman and watch a little piece of him die inside.

Remember all this isn't always the rule especially on things like stomp boxes and effects pedals (some have a high profit margin, but most don't) or certain electronics. This can also be applied to certain brands that have locked in prices (meaning nobody not even the salesman can get a discount). Some of these locked in brands and items include: Mesa, Mogami, Monster, Live-wire, Software (pro-tools ect.) and brand new 'hot gear' pieces like the Boss gt8 and pod XT live.

Yeah man... Guitar Center fucking sucks. I will never buy any guitars or amps there ever again. Except for my friend who works there, can get me a 35% discount.. but I usually only go there for strings and picks, and to beat the fuck out of their drums.

You're right about the salesmen too. Most people who work in just about every department, don't know shit about guitars, or drums, or amps.. so on. I was there once and this lady was asking the guitar sale guy what the difference was between a floyd rose and the fixed bridge.. the guy just kind of stood there like... uhhh.... I think it has something to do with the tuning. I went up and explained it to the lady, and then she asked me a bunch more questions, and I told her the guitar to get, and she got it. The salesman was pissed. I can think of fifty more scenarios where the guys at guitar center didn't know shit about shit. You ask them a question and they are like... ummmmmmm...... :drooling:

Yeah, and please no one.. don't ever sell anything to those fucks. They markup 500% on average. My friend sold his Triple Rectifier to them in mint condition.. which he paid like 2k for.. they gave him $200.. and he took it because he was desperate for money. Two days later we walk in and see his amp on sale for $1700.. which he probably could have gotten for it if he sold it on ebay or something. Fucking bullshit. Fuck Guitar Center.

Oh If he manages to get you something at cost or damn near it(which it sounds like he has. 35% on a guitar would probably be in the range of a dollar of profit) DO NOT bring it back to that store (or any "GC"), especially if it was something high ticket (guitar, amp etc...) "Guitarget" tracks their serial #'s on the gear (when it came in, who sold it, when it was sold, who bought it.) If you bring it back in and they find out the serial number syncs up with something a friend got for you at cost, they will fire him! "GC" also tracks serial number's and references them on ebay to see if employees are buying gear at cost and reselling it on the net. If they find the gear that was bought for you on ebay within a 6 month period, they will fire him. Just be careful...My supervisor liked me alot, so when i went in there for anything (picks, strings, stand's and mic's only, thats all I am willing to buy from them.)he'd sell to me at cost. It was funny cause the store manager hated it, but this dude was there before the asshat manager took over the store, so the manager couldn't really do anything about it.
