Darwin's Correlation of Growth
    #4777259 -

I am currenly reading Darwin's Origin of the Species, and have a question about a statement he makes in the first chapter, "Variation Under Domestication." When describing the different laws that regulate variation, Darwin talks about Correlation of Growth, which he explains by saying that "Any change in the embryo or larva will almost certainly entail changes in the mature animal." As an example he says:

"Some instances of correlation are quite whimsical; thus cats with blue eyes are invariably deaf."

I thought this was strange, so I did some further research into the topic, and from what I have gathered, a blue-eyed cat is definitely not invariably deaf. White cats with blue eyes are said to be deaf quite often, but I have heard of exceptions. My mom also claims that she had a blue-eyed cat when she was younger and that it had adequate hearing.

So whats the deal here? Is this just outdated information? I was under the impression that the statements put forth in this book were generally legitimate, but this throws things into question. Perhaps I am interpreting the statement incorrectly?

Darwin may have been considering that the as yet unproven linked gene phenomenon applied to the blue eyed cat (which may not have been linked, though some aspect of it may have been). it has been since proven that some biophysical features are invariably linked even though they have no practical reason to be linked (the term whimsical falls in, but actually all of it is equally whimsical - i.e there is no Designer as such at this level except for the principle of "survival of the fittest").

some unrelated feature expressions may be totally dependent on presence or absence of some other feature. (note that with mongolism, a genetic effect impacts on a constellation of feature changes, from lines on the palm, epicanthic folds at the eyes, brain formation, and lifespan.)

At the time of Darwin, I don't think they knew that much about Genes technically and certainly not anything about DNA.
However they did understand enough about Genes to know how the math of their combinations worked in heredity ever since Mendel.

Yes, it's probably just outdated information. I think this is comparable to Albinism in humans. I think Albinism is a result of three different genes and if you are homozygous for the trait in one gene you are simply an Albino, but if you are for two or three of the genes you can have impaired vision or blindness. Blue eyes and hearing impairments in cats probably work in a similar way, but I don't really know.

Although this thread was posted more than 5 years ago, I feel the need to set things straight. First, Darwin's statement that "cats with blue eyes are invariably deaf" got modified in succeeding editions of the book. By the fourth edition it read "cats that are entirely white and have blue eyes are generally deaf". Darwin was simply wrong in his first assertion. To his credit, and unlike many of his critics, he admitted this when the facts came to light.

Second, in his reply, redandgreenvines said:  "At the time of Darwin, I don't think they knew that much about Genes technically and certainly not anything about DNA. However they did understand enough about Genes to know how the math of their combinations worked in heredity ever since Mendel." That's not the case. The fact is that Mendel was a contemporary of Darwin, so "ever since" wasn't long, and almost nobody, including Darwin, had ever heard of Mendel's work. Darwin was working entirely without any knowledge of what would come to be called genes. If the internet had been around, they would have discovered each other, and their collaboration would have blown the scientific community away, more than even Darwin's work did.
