I'll have to check ridgebacks out then. I want the dog to stay in the house and my husband isn't into indoor animals but suggested a Great Dane. I think that would be too much.

This particular dog was both great indoors and out. They're intimidating looking, big jaws, but as long as you train them right, they're great. One time, the baby fell in the living room, and the dog was out in the fenced backyard. The dog hurdled a 6 foot high fence to run into the house to see what happened to the baby....it was impressive.

I had a german shepard that was protective of my children. It was weird because she didn't like my oldest when she was a baby. The crying scared her but soon enough my kids were her kids. She was a rescue and it seemed like she appreciated that and showed it in her own way. She died last year of old age.

I'm sorry to hear that :frown:

German Shepards are awesome.  I would love one, or a husky.  When we have more room, I'm getting SO many more animals!

Better off with a Shephard than a Husky I think.  Although, I'm a bit biased as I love German Shephards.  But I've heard things from Husky owners like "They like to run away just for fun".

She was a mix but mostly geman shepard. Here she is with my basset mix. His name is Huck. I have 2 dogs in the back yard but they are scared of people and I can't take them any where. I so want a dog in the house and I want to raise it from a puppy. I've always had rescues and they have been abused so it's just too much stess on them to try and socialize them now.

That's one of the reasons we went through a breeder finally...my boyfriend's sister has a dog who's a sweetheart, but it seems she was abused before they adopted her...and she's terrified of people :frown:

She warms up after a while, but I want a friendly social dog that's not scared of it's own shadow.

Yeah. I have always tried to go to a shelter and save a life but the black lab I referred to earlier was from a shelter. We had her 2 weeks, enough time for my kids to get really attached before we found out she had been exposed to destemper in the shelter. She was so little all we could do was put her down.

My rescues were found on the side of the road so I knew they had issues. Thats why the rest of their lives will be spent in my backyard being dogs and nothing more. They deserve to do whatever they want.
