I assume you are using the PF tek method? If so I wouldn't use quart jars, though I'm sure they could work. Do you have a pressure cooker?

why not use quart jars? I am using PF tek -- what is another good bulk method? I was gonna use these Ball quart widemouths with a amazonian strain the only thing I was worried about is that the sides are not really tapered.

Reason being because using the PF tek quart jars will take a very long time to colonize...probably well over two months, giving contams plenty of time to play with your cultures. I suggest if you are going to use quart jars then use a grain that is shakeable, such as rye, millet, wheat, or birdseed. You need a pressure cooker however.

ok so lets say I use a different kind of substrate and I got the pressure cooker today so is the widemouth ball quart jar good? the top of the jar looks like it has a neck almost I don't wanna fuck it up when I take it out. Also I see all these pics of big cakes of substrate do they just clump alot of them together or do I have to leave some space? can I use something else to do that? your help is much appreciated as this is our first time. peace chronic1

Ok you got me a bit confused there. If they are widemouth jars they should be the same width at the top as they are at the bottom. If you use grain..the cake method will (probably) not work, though I have never tried it. You would either need to case it, or grow directly from the jar. I have grown from the jar before on accident, left the top off and by the window and a week later there was our favorite fungus friends popping up everywhere. If you take the lid off and grow directly from the jar the shrooms will grow to full maturity..not like those nasty squished in-vitro shrooms. Sorry if I am being confusing, but I think you would run into some problems with PF tek on quart jars. I have used pints before and those took quite some time..half pints usually take about a month..I cant imagine how long a quart would take.

you know, I had the hardest time trying to track down the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars. I tried a bunch of places like Target, and Fred Meyer. Anyway, went to my local grocery store today here in the Seattle area, and figured i'd just check to see fi they had them. Voila, 2 boxes of the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars. I had to take them home. :) lucky me.

1/2 Pint wide mouth jars make for quicker colinization, and easy storage. After innoculation the jars can be restacked on their side in 4 rows of 4 jars, cut the flaps off the open box and you can cut your storage space by 1/3, fitting 96 jars in 6 small boxes. AFOAF has told me this is very helpfull in his bulk tek of 50+ boxes of the little suckers. If you look hard enough you should be able to find a steady supplier of jars a a local hardware store, tell the you are making candles in your garage and you wil usualy find people are more than willing to help. yeah, i was really surprised too see them as well. Specially at my local grocery store where I usually shop. Who would'a figured. I ended up going back the next day and picking up the other box of them (and last box of them.) Figured it was worth the 7.50 to just pick 'em up why I had the chance. Yeah, the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars do seem small. Well, they're short anyway. Guess that could help them from falling over once you birth them anyway.
