Will 1 quart Ball Jars work or are they too big?
    #1558012 - 05/18/03 05:15 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I know all the instructions call for 1/2 pint jars but a freind of mine has 12 1 quart ball jars that would be good for growing. Is there a problem with using those or should we try to track down some 1/2 pint jars?

If the 1 quarts wont work then where can I find some 1/2 pints?

Thanks.

If you are making PF cakes they aren't going to work, there's no way to get them out of the jars.

u mean for pf style cakes, if they r wide mouth(having no lip) then they will work but will take really long time to colonize(especially if u do 12 w/ 1 syringe), if u dont wanna track down 1/2pint jars, try trakcing down some grains(i.e. rye berries, millet, or wbs)

if you are a newbie start with the 1/2 pint jars. A 1 quart jar is awfully big and there is more room for error. Therefore if you end up having to toss some it isn't like a huge loss.

yeah, thats what I was thinking.

Also, would grain as a substrate work better than vermiculite? Ive been reading up on it and it seems like it would be a lot easier to do a casing and I like the idea of being able to innoculate other jars with the substrate from one jar.

Is it harder or easier than vermiculite?

Do you mean verm+brf? Most ppl that are just starting out choose verm+brf over grains. It is easier and there is less chance for contamination. You can probably get away with grain for the first time if your tek. is very steril otherwise go with the verm+brf.

After further reading I'm just gonna stick with the verm+brf. Seems easy and I really don't wanna screw up our first grow.

Heh, just weighing options here.
