pre made casing!
    #474012 - 11/29/01 09:33 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I was in Ace Hardware this evening and I found a bag off stuff called "potting soil plus" made by shultz. The ingredients are reed-sedge peat, shagnum peat, horticultural vermiculite, a wetting agent, and lime for proper pH balance.

I thought cool!!!

Does anybody now if this stuff will work and do I need to pressure cook it first? If I do, what's the best thing to do with it? Do you think I need to just go with the standard 50/50?

Thanks for your responses!

I use it, and it works great. I do sterlize it by pressure cooking it for 45 minutes at 15 pounds of pressure. I lay a layer of sterilized vermiculite at the bottom of my trays, and cover the mycelium with the potting soil plus. It's sure easier than measuring the individual ingredients out.

Thanks for the info....If it really does work I wonder why everybody doesn't use it....It sure does seem a lot easier...And you can get it just about anywhere.

I also read somewhere on this board that you can put the thick plastic bags that the stuff comes in in the pressure cooker. Does anybody have any advice on this?

I don't know about putting the plastic bag in the pressure cooker, I put the casing in a cotton pillow case and tie the open end into a knot.

i was told by shroom wizard that potting soil with plus in it means that it would kill little fungus's such as mushrooms, im not sure that this applies to your exact product though

Hey Frank-Grimes, how much H2O do you put in the pressure cooker with the pillow case? Think boiling would be adequate?
Thanks.

Not trying to be one of those..."Do a search" people, because I don't want to assume that you haven't...BUT...Do a search!!!

I read some interesting stuff about this Shultz's mix about a month ago and have been looking for it ever since...The consensus was that it works...but I've never tried it...
