casing tek!
    #471121 - 11/27/01 12:59 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I plan on using a 50/50 mix for my casing. Is it completely neccessary to pressure cook this mix before I use it? What if I just used straight vermiculite, would I need to cook it? And how much better would my casing be if I used the hydrated lime and the crushed oyster shell? Thanks for your replies....This board has helped me big time!

As to whether you need to pressure cook the casing mix will get you mixed responses. Some say that microbials are necessary to the casing so they either pasturize or don't do anything to it. Some say they sterilize it in a pressure cooker. I have had good results simply pasturizing it for a short time, but I use the lime and oyster shells and the lime helps w/ contams.

Vermiculite shouldn't have a problem w/ contams as there is no nutrients in it. Bacteria shouldn't be able to thrive on in.

My advice to whether you should use the lime and oyster shells is that you don't have to but the casing is much sturdier and so are the mushrooms. You probably won't have a bigger yield, but they seem to grow healthier and stronger.

Hope this helps

I've also heard about using perilite as your bottom layer in casing. Does this help keep the casing moist as well as keep the contaimination down?
Just a thought on the casing Tek.

I was thinking of using compost to case with a bottom of vermeculite. Has anyone tried this already? How did it work?
