Myc or cobweb? I'm really not sure..
    #4732073 - 09/29/05 04:10 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, so about a week ago I posted a thread here on the same topic but couldnt get any decent pics.I got my camera back, so that problem is solved.

But heres whats really bothering me.

I inoculated my jars about 11 days ago, and they are getting mighty colonized. much faster than I thought. the stuff growing in the jars looks light grey with areas of white, which leads me to believe its cobweb.

but then the problem with that theory is that cobweb colonizes extremely fast, and its been 4 days sofar and the cakes havnt been consumed yet. What would you say it is, judging by the pictures and description? should I trash them?

Also, could the light grey stuff have something to do with being left in the light? I just leave the jars on my floor and theres plenty of ambient light around.

Anyways, thanks for any help you can give me.

i take back my first impression, upon closer inspection of the pics they are definitely unlike any myc growth i have seen. doesn't appear to be cobweb either though, is it kind of powedery looking?

I was trying to figure it out just with the info. Pic's look blue to me,lol.

If you thought it was cob web a week ago, those cakes would be covered now.

The jars look like they should at 11 days. Even filling in the way mycelium would. Coming from the inoculation points and meeting at the bottom. Better pic's would definitely help.

Whenever I've had a jar with that much condensation on the inside, it's tended to be lost to contam. However, that led to a brownish, foul smelling mold that could NOT be mistaken for myc. When you take them out of the jars, do it outside or in a well ventilated area, and if you notice a smell right off when you open them then toss the jar.

In the first pic of all the jars I can see what I think is a white spot of myc, contrasting with the gray of the "mold". But it also looks like its all growing very consistently.

My vote is that you should wait for colonization, and then decide when you have the cake in your (gloved and sterilized) hands. If it looks or smells "off" in any way, then toss the bugger, and PC the jar for an hour just to be sure.

maybe something like this: https://www.shroomery.org/images/23418/green10.jpg
maybe, it looks kinda similar but it is hard to tell through the jar.

yeah, if you think of that in a jar, then i think thats what i've got.

I'll go take some better shots in RAW so the white balance is correct.. then it should be a bit easier to see.

Thanks for the input sofar though everyone.

Here we go.. this jar looked fairly fucked, so it became a sacrifice. (i dont mind cannibalizing one.. its only one!)

looks quite grey to me :undecided:

I can also say that this particular jar does NOT smell funky either.

Green mold caused by Trichoderma harzianum is characterized by an aggressive, white mycelium that grows over the casing and onto mushrooms, causing a soft decay. Masses of spores that eventually form are emerald green. Heavily infested patches of compost are barren. This is currently the most important disease in the U.S. Agaricus industry. Many farms spread salt on the compost in affected areas when green mold is first recognized. Strict sanitation is essential. Shelving, trays, walls, floors, etc. may be surface disinfested as a matter of routine, but it is done with a sense of urgency following an outbreak of a disease. Many commercial products are available for cleaning surfaces. The base ingredients in these materials include chlorine, iodine, phenol, or quaternary ammonium, among others. Surface disinfectants are used farm-wide, from equipment sanitation to room washdowns to foot-dip solutions to picking basket prewash. Other Green Molds may be better defined as indicators sin ce they don?t seem to be as aggressive as T. harzianum. These species of Trichoderma also sporulate on the casing surface and may sporulate on infected mushrooms. These fungi indicate that carbohydrates are available, possibly due to inadequate nitrogen supplementation during Phase I or undercomposting. T. viride reportedly produce toxins that dissolve mushroom cells walls. A wet compost low in ammonia prior to pasteurization, flies, poor sanitation, anaerobiosis, and other factors influence green mold. These fungi are common in sawdust and commonly occur in the production of specialty mushrooms.
Trichoderma is often mistaken for Penicillium or Aspergillus molds(and vice versa), being that all three look very similar and are not easy to tell appart without the use of a microsope.
Some pictures underneath possibly show any of the three genuses out of the aforementioned reason.
