You ever so slightly "crack" the lid open enough to get a whiff . Yes the possibility of letting contams in is there , but at some point you decide it "may" be contaminated and need to take the chance and check . You are also hoping that if you passed the smell test , the mycelium in the jar is strong enough to fight off any bad guys you "may" have let in when sniffing .

Make sure you are as clean as possible i.e. hands , face , and the most important the nose , do not breath out into the jar at all . Also do the old lysol/clorox spray the air before opening up jars . Do all you can to reduce the chance of contamination getting in . :wink:
