President Bush tells us to cut back on driving...
    #4719926 -

However, it costs americans $1000.00 to fill up his chopper and when he went for a 5 mile drive to go out to dinner, it costs us $600 for all the vans and suvs that have to go with him (by secret services) :whatever:

I think he's getting nervous, both from the data coming out of the Saudi oil fields and the fact that members of the government are now speaking out on the Peak Oil issue.

Congressman Bartlett (R-MD) held a conference on Peak Oil yesterday. He also met personally with Bush last month to discuss Peak Oil and said that "the President was quite aware of peak oil".

Plus he can't be feeling to good with so much oil/natgas production shut down in the Gulf...

The oil shale under Colorado will save the day.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Shale oil != oil

It's actually more of a waxy substance. There are some doubts that it could ever be processed into usable fuel at a net energy gain (meaning it will take more energy to turn it into oil than you will get out of the oil - not a good thing).

Didn't you see the Colorado oil shale article in one of the peak oil threads? I think the energy ratio was 3.5 units of energy gained for every 1 unit of energy used. It would cost about $30 a barrel to get at and refine supposedly.

It should be a huge wakeup call when Chevron takes out a two page ad stating "we believe that innovation, collaboration and conservation are the cornerstone on which to build this new world". Here is a gas company essentially asking people to buy less of their product because there simply isn't enough to supply the current trend of modern society. When they state "many of the world's oil and gas fields are maturing" its a nice way of saying "We are running the fuck out of this resource and fast!".

Whenever I see a Hummer on the road I just want to pull the driver out of that monstrosity and bitchslap them back to africa.

If that was true, it would already be in use.

Oil is currently around $65/barrel. If it could be had from Shale Oil for half that price, there'd be people jumping on it like fat kid on cake.

Go read the article. It explains why things aren't up and running yet. I do forget which thread it was in. Just look up "Colorado Shale" in the politics forum.

Just read the article, and I'm still very suspicious, for the following reasons:

-first, they have to heat up a LARGE section of rock (shale oil) to around 650-750 degrees....that isn't cheap, energy-wise (for comparrison, my stove uses around 5000W to heat the oven up to 400 degrees)

-second, they have to use a LARGE refrigeration system to freeze-solid a "wall of ice" around the entire field. refrigeration equipment is incredibly wasteful of energy (again, for comparrison, my "energy efficient" air conditioner uses around 3000 watts to cool my house by a mere 5-10 degrees)

Here's a quote from the article:

"On one small test plot about 20 feet by 35 feet, on land Shell owns, they started heating the rock in early 2004. "Product" - about one-third natural gas, two-thirds light crude - began to appear in September 2004."

If we take "early 2004" to be a conservative estimate of March...then they were continuously heating the rock (and simultaneously freezing everything around it) for six months before they ever got a drop of oil! Then after cointinuing to heat for another year they managed to squeeze out 1,500 barrels of oil. That is, quite frankly, rediculous. 1,500 barrels? Shit, I could piss that much in a year (joke)!

Also, you made a slight error: they didn't say oil from this method would cost $30/barrel...they said it "should be commercially feasible with world oil prices at $30 a barrel". Meaning if crude oil was at $30/barrel, this method of shale oil production would produce about the same profits as the crude oil.

Well prices are over double that price, so shale oil should be more lucrative than Platinum mining right now...if this article has any merit to it.

I could try to estimate the total energy usage in producing oil in this manner, but unfortunately the article isn't specific enough on a few things (I'd need to know the initial rock temp, rock density and heat capacity, ACTUAL size of the field, efficiency of the refrigerant system and thickness of the icewall needed).

On the bright side, when all the oil runs out, we can all use our now useless vehicles for low cost housing when the economy turns into shit!

Though I'm sure they'll be available at cut-rate prices if it gets too expensive for most people to drive :smirk:
