In law there are numerous types of disclaimers. Among them are disclaiming liability, disclaiming knowledge, disclaiming responsibility, advertising disclaimers, medical disclaimers... the list goes on. I know this, and I'm anything but a lawyer. C'mon, I know you're smarter than this.

3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Ahh yes, but those aren't "types" of disclaimers....they're still all just disclaimers...you've simply defined them by what they contain.

Why do you feel such a need to have "sissy" in the name of a disclaimer? Do you feel some need to rub it in to those the disclaimer would protect?

Every disclaimer I can ever remember reading has simply been called "Disclaimer" - no fancy words added to make it "more precise".

For the same reason, the word Disclaimer is not good enough because it doesn't say what is being disclaimed.

Well that only matters if no one intends to read the disclaimer, doesn't it? If everyone read it, there should be no need to call it a "Sissy Disclaimer" because the meaning would be painfully clear simply from the content of the disclaimer.

Just a note: Philosophical discussion is ruthless in nature. It is the systematic process of being presented an idea and probing it for weaknesses. When a weakness is found it is torn to shreds.

Things of that nature can easily be misconstrued as being harsh when in reality they are only accurate.

Another observation is that philosophy fiends tend to be a little more prone to sarcastic humor in attempts to get their point across.

Yet another comment...I suggest the disclaimer read as such: "Disclaimer: I am easily butthurt by any form of criticism"

As I was the first to suggest this idea (see Debunkism as a Lifestyle), the original text should be used:

DISCLAIMER: I am highly sensitive to having my expressed beliefs questioned or examined by others. Please post only support and encouragement on this thread.

another dumb point   the rest of my post provided supporting argument.

Quote:
If Sissy Disclaimer (a v-r-y apt name for it) is offensive, what alternate name do you propose?

what's wrong with "disclaimer" ?

Quote:
the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant

Condensed, this says euphemism is substituting a less precise expression of what you intend to communicate for the sole purpose of sparing someone's feelings.

why does being inoffensive have to mean being less precise?

Quote:
If someone's feelings are a function of my words rather than my true meaning, then they have issues.

if a person's offended when their viewpoint is belittled, the fact they're offended makes sense.  having feelings is not the same as having issues.

That's like being satisfied with an known insincere apology.

i don't think anyone should have to apologize for their viewpoint.  the viewpoint a poster has is different from the tone in which it's delivered.

there should be no need to call it a "Sissy Disclaimer" because the meaning would be painfully clear simply from the content of the disclaimer.

Let's take a hypothetical.

Next month, we decide to start using a Drug Use Disclaimer (DUD) for those of us who disclaim having anything to do with illegal drugs, just in case someone's watching. With two types of disclaimers, it will become necessary to give unique names to each.

One would then be known as the DUD. What do you propose we name the other one?

I prefer butthurt as it promotes self-evaluation.

Hypothetically, in such a case I would call it the "Non-criticism Disclaimer"

You still haven't answered my question: why do you feel the need to include an insult (don't pretend "sissy" is anything but that) in a disclaimer title?

Personally, I can think of no other reason than wanting to bash-in the fact that you think some other people are sissies.

Yes, I do think certain people are incapable of dealing with certain facets of reality and attempt to avoid them by simply not exposing themselves to these things or attempting to have others soften the discussion so the lowest common denominator won't be upset.

Further, I would say it's a sign of mental/emotional weakness and should not be catered to but rather developed until it's non-existant. This forum is about growth and change, isn't it?

Non-criticism Disclaimer

Alright, that's good. I'll start using that term from now on.

You still haven't answered my question: why do you feel the need to include an insult (don't pretend "sissy" is anything but that) in a disclaimer title?

I didn't propose it as an insult but as a very precise description of what it is. Don't pretend sissy doesn't perfectly describe someone who's feelings are easily hurt.

But, like I said, seeing as how people who's feelings are easily hurt would have their feelings hurt by being referred to as sissies, I'll concede and start using the new term.

Non-criticism Disclaimer.

This forum is about growth and change, isn't it?

Yes, MOST definitely!

Yet as so many people have pointed out: insulting a person is 99% of the time NOT GOING TO LEAD ANYWHERE PRODUCTIVE! Not only are you likely to anger said person, but you will likely harden their stance - making them all bun unable to see it your way or accept anything you say to them after you have insulted them.

So, I ask again: what makes you want to call them "sissies"? Could you not give your viewpoint with a little more tact?

Cool man

I do agree with you (as I'm sure you know) but I prefer to avoid calling people names - even if deserving of it - if there is any chance that by calling them a name I will turn them off from EVERYTHING I say. Then, anything I do say is just wasted breath! Much better to soften the blow, I think.

sis-sy 1. an effeminate boy or man. 2. A timid or cowardly person.

A very precise description? I don't think so.
