I made a decision on What to o with my life.
    #4675239 - 09/17/05 10:10 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I know this goes against everything I believe in but I decided to go to the Marines. I should ship out to Parris Island South Carolina sometime in January. I know alot of you here on this board would think me stupid for doing this. I wouldn't blame you and I respect alot of your opinions, but this is something I have to do for myself. I just wanted to let you guys. I told you before I told my grandparents. Well lets here your comments, put downs, etc. etc. etc.

Well, I would advise you to reconsider, unless you've already signed the papers. If so, then I wish you good luck. It certainly won't be the easiest thing you've ever done, but I'm sure you're aware of that.

On the plus side, I've heard they do have some very good educational benefits, and a stint in the military always looks good on a resume!

Good luck; I would have taken the Air Force - they are better to their people, but the marines needs people.

Yes they have excellent educational benefits.  It will look excellent on my resume. Yeah I realize that it wont be easy but I need a HELL of alot of structure in my life.  I'm tired of just kinda floatin by in life not really going anywhere.

My grandaddy was a Marine.  My best friend was in the Marines (before he was killed) He always tried to get em to go in with him.  I don't know of any other branch that will give me the physical fitness that the Marines will.

I am also joining the Canadian Army, next year or so, I wan't to learn all there is to learn from the army, take in all the perks, and then get out. I want to challenge my body mind and soul, and you can not do that in this society, I need to get out there and see what I'm capable of.

Good luck to you.

do you want to be in the position of killing someone or of being killed yourself? Could you do it for politics/money/laws/peace/freedom? Could you do it for one of those that you had a conflictng opinion with?

I think I'd rather stumble through into a direction of my own than having the military own my ass 24/7 and dealing with that social structure/environment. Fucking rough culture shock.

wow dude, that's pretty intense. I wish you all the luck in the world. You'll need it! Those fuckin' hajiis will will never give up, and they think they've got God on their side...

I understand the need for structure and direction, but do you really think that you'll be willing to kill/be killed for structure, direction, and benefits?

All you need to bring those things into your life is a strong will. The army won't be able to give that to you. It comes from inside.

Good luck!

Would you still be allowed to post in The Shroomery from a military base?

If you can handle it, I will say, when you get out, if you arent totally psychotic , you will be well prepared for life's challenges . It is a admirable choice Jetta , thank you for deciding to defend the land so many of us cherish as home, all the best to you ! oh and ... get your teeth fixed if you have problems before you go in ... the horror stories are true , much of my family was in military, and they all say the same thing, shell out the money, and get your ivory fixed before hand ...( edited : Keep in mind these family members were enlisted during vietnam era , lol, they have gotten better I think, ask around in anycase, dental work is expensive , shouldent have gone out and sugest something like that based on decades old facts  Best of luck though !  - Tranceharper
