crazy stupid substrate
    #466983 - 11/22/01 09:19 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I am just curious, has anyone tried some kinda weird, rediculous substrate as a joke and actually had success? I want to try to experiment with some really stupid mixtures and get it to work good. Haven't thought of anything yet.

Broom corn seeds with the husks still on them are great. Wish I could get some more. Seed heads from pig weed or amaranth are also good. If you use grain (wheat, rye, oats, etc.) with with the husks left on there is no need for verm. Some things that don't work well are banana peels and potato slices.

Granulated cork instead of verm.

I have never questioned this, but what do spores look for to start colonization? What kinds of minerals or org. materials do they need and want to start up?
