Most of us know about archive.org. I downloaded a cool Jerry interview there as well as some sweet Ken Kesey stuff.

My first Dead song was Friend of the Devil. Although I still love the song, I don't think I'd call it my favorite.

The first dead song that I can remember hearing was touch of gray and the dead came on an episode of silver spoons and sang that song and had the skeleton puppets...it was cool as hell back then and I loved that show too, as gay as it seems now...lol

"The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer."

Cosmic Charlie was, I think, the first Dead song that I heard. It was when I was about 12, or 13, I think. I still love it and can probably say that it remains in the top 15, definitely.

I remember seeing the Touch of Grey music video when I was much younger and at the time I didn't like it at all. It wasn't until I was 15 that I watched my first dead show, that being View from the Vaults(7/8/90). As I sat incredibly stoned on my friends bean bag chair he threw in set two and put on track 2 Eyes of the World and thats what did it for me. Jerry's playing just blew my mind. Everytime time I listen to Eyes I'll always remember the first time I heard it....good times:gd_icon:

Too bad very very few people in Sweden have even heard about the Grateful Dead. :/

The first Grateful Dead song I remember hearing was Touch of Grey. This was on MTV, way back in early 1987. I was 11 at the time. When I was younger, adults driving me around always had the radio on, so I may have heard some Grateful Dead much earlier. That's not very likely, though, because we didn't have any hippie friends or family.

For portions of the past 10 1/2 years I've done work for a company founded by an ex-Dead Head. He never turned me on to their music, although I distinctly remember the huge number of tapes he had mounted on the wall of his living room.

In 1997, when I had an internship in North Carolina, I hung out with Dead Heads and hippies for the first time. They were still getting over the death of Jerry but they were a fun crowd. I didn't use any drugs with them besides smoke pot, but I did observe coke being used for the first time and scored my first hit of acid, which I held on to for the next six years. They didn't turn me on to the Dead, either, but it was probably not for a lack of trying. I did see my first jam band, though, Widespread Panic.

The following year I had a co-op in North Carolina and I had lost touch with the old crowd. I did manage to see my first Phish show that year, though.

Then for the next 5 years or so I attempted to finish engineering school and labored hard at my job, not having any friends or a social life.

But in the Fall of 2003, something snapped. My job wasn't going well, so I needed something to be happy about. I joined the Nook and the Shroomery, went to Bonnaroo the following year, and really ratcheted up gatherings and festivals this year. Coming to love the Dead was just a natural outgrowth of my development as a human being and my shifting around of priorities to what really matters.

Eyes of the World covered by Dave Matthews.

First song by GD, either Morning Dew or Friend of the Devil. And I still love them both

oh, and i remember being like 11 and my friend Cody was teaching me the lyrics to Casey Jones, we got yelled at for singing "driving that train, high on cocaine" while running around the hallways - his mom was a big head at the time. he has since become a fanatical born again christian. strange how time change people.s

In 8th grade.. i was at my friend's house and he put on Fire on the mountain. I was like "what is this weird music?"

then we went outside, smoked a blunt, came back inside.. put on Fire on the mountain again, and I couldnt believe my ears. I sounded so amazing. I havent stopped listening to the Dead since that night.

but thats far from my favorite dead song.. its between Eyes and Peggy O
