How bad are caffeine addictions?
    #4652093 - 09/12/05 08:11 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I'm starting to get hooked on flavored coffees and can sometimes get them for free.

But I don't like the caffeine "downs" (usually when you haven't had one in a while and are sleepy and you use that as an excuse to have one) and the headaches and whatnot....

I know so so so many people have a mandatory cup of coffee, or two, or three per day... and I mean, in my mind this is kind of liking having a few medium smokes of mary jane a day or a beer or two to take off the edge at night....

but the difference being caffeine has a tendency to be physically addictive, and I'm not sure if I want to keep drinking this stuff just because it tastes good and I have weird cravings for it.

Are any of you caffeine junkies? Should I run away? I find caffeine is much more tolerable to intake in coffees and mocas and whatnot than it is in soda form, which I'm kind of growing out of.

It's not too bad, if you're going by withdrawal symptoms. I just get a very mild headache and mild craving when I don't get my dose. Plus coffee is still pretty cheap (provided you brew it youtself), so it's really no biggie at all.

Run away, because it's a bitch of a habit to break. Last year I broke the habit for a few months, and the first week was pretty nasty. Headaches, on edge, etc.. It's just another one of the wonderful drugs our civilization is hooked on, no different than cigarettes or alcohol really. Oh, and coffee is really effective at permantently staining your teeth. Are these things worth a coffee habit? Not really.

Really? It wasn't all that bad for me. I guess it depends on the individual....

Yeah, it was pretty bad.  Even worse was going back to it after quitting  :foreheadslap:  That was also coming off about 1/2 pot a day of very strong coffee, so I'm sure my current intake of 1-2 cups office coffee/day wouldn't be that hard to break.

i remember reading that coffee use is negatively correlated with suicide.

and for an alternative to coffee, try green tea.

like the previous poster said, green tea is an ideal replacement for coffee... i drink green tea all day for months and have absolutely no withdrawls if i quit for a while, it also doesn't fuck with your sleep-cycle. Also, i find it more relaxing than any other caffienated beverage (while still giving you a minor awareness boost). It has a shitload of anti-oxidants too

i love tea! just forget about coffee, tea is the way to go. Personally i only like tea if i make it, and do it the way i like it. Go buy a few different flavors and then try putting some honey or sugar in it. A lot better than coffee. It is always fun trying new flavors. And if i remember correctly it is oolang tea with no caffeine, just stay away from black/brown tea.

oolong tee can be really strong try Tie Guan Yin Superior or Tie Guan Yin Monkey Pick. I also dont like black tee except pu erh, this is the most perfect tee for me.

Tee vs. Coffee, tee effects last longer and are less sharp. Nevertheless, sometimes i also drink a cup of coffee.

I'm 20 years old, I started drinking coffee in 7th grade. I didn't think it was all too difficult to quit.

Here is a recollection of my experience

If you want to have caffeine, definitely switch to drinking green tea.  It is really good for you, has antioxidants and crap that may help prevent disease or cancer or something.  I make sure I eat/drink healthy so I generally avoid coffee or other caffeine sources, but green tea is so healthy it is a good excuse to have a little caffeine.
