This shows how much information your text had for me....
Think what you wanna say first, THEN post your master-piece again!
Seriously, what more than "anyone who has ever used any sort of drug on more than an occassional basis can answer yes to almost all of these questions. " is addiction for you?

would you want to stop using psychadelics all together from now on? Wouldnt that let a gap in your life? If yes, then wouldnt that be addiction?

I'll be more specific. Some of the things this lists suggests are sign of addiction are just ludicrous.

Do you find yourself using alcohol, drugs or sex to reduce anxiety or help you sleep?

Ummmmmmm, come on now .... why dont we just go ahead and sum up every reason anyone has ever used drugs into one sentance. This pretty much qualifies 99% of all drug use as a sign of addiction. And whats wrong with using sex to reduce anxiety and/or help you sleep?!

Do you ever drink or use alone?

Since when is using a drug in a non-social environment a sign of addiction? I actually find my experiences with marijuana and psychedelics to me more rewarding while I'm alone. Am i addict because i prefer to use alone?

Do you do or say things you later regret when drinking or using?

Um.....who hasn't? its called BEING HUMAN.

Have you slept in your car, or away from home because you were too drunk to drive?

Have you ever stopped or cut back on drinking or using because you felt it was causing problems in your life?

These two crack me up. These are signs of addiction?! Haha, to me these are signs of someone trying to be more responsible and safe.

Is your life increasingly chaotic and turbulent?

This is another funny one. Whos' life isnt?! Its called entropy.

I agree pretty much with what has been said about the "existentialist" explanation of addiction,
first i think everybody will reckon that most of the symptoms in Thor's list are really subjective and rely on so many possible different reasons to occur that its unwise to allow them too much importance alone. Well, if somebody ever answers ALL of them positively well for sure i will accept that he/she has an addiction problem, but i beliee like calyxico?? that most of drug users see it more as an image given of her life, a kind of decoration flattering the ego, giving pleasure and used as social statement (even if it leads to an unsocial behavior, which is also a statement:). So i don't want to deprive me of something pleasurable, and i am ready to take some negative social, personal and health effects for it. And some just do too much and have too much of the negative effects, can go up to death, but thats because they have a problem with their life, the goals, the vision. A shaman has to take hallucinogens as well as the coffee shop owner in amsterdam has to test different strains of marijuana, its part of their life goal, it fits. If you misuse any drug its because you misuse your life first, and that has to change.

PS:
my favorite:
Do you ever drink or use drugs after waking up to reduce anxiety or cope with a hangover? Everybody knows drinking a beer is the best way to get rid of a hangover, thats just anatomical physical knowledge, pfff!

Perhaps it won't diagnose signs of addiction,

but the list may give people a reason to examine their actions. Not neccessarily to call themselves addicts and play victim, but to willfully change their own behavior.

Me, I recently realized i've been drinking WAY too much in the wake of a bad breakup. I cut the hell back on it.

If you do this all the time to sleep, then you obviously have a problem. How hard is this to understand, you are using substances to do what healthy people do without those things.

These are 'signs' of addiction, not rules of addiction. Jeesus, take this all way to literally, this is a guide to make people more aware of signs that could mean you have some issues with substance abuse.

Quote:

Do you do or say things you later regret when drinking or using?

Regret from when you were drinking is a sign that you are having control issues on how much you drink. If you regret something that means you think you wouldnt have done that thing sober, so you regret the action. Loss of control is a sign that you can't handle your drinking or that you are starting to drink too much, etc.. All signs this is common place for you that you are walking down a road of abuse.

I have maybe done less than 10 stupid things when I was drunk to regret in the last 10 years, and yeah all of us do stupid things once in a while under the influence, but what this sign points towards if you do this often is that you have control issues with drinking. That you can't handle your liquor most of the time you drink is a definate sign you should stop drinking or drink less.

Quote:

Have you ever stopped or cut back on drinking or using because you felt it was causing problems in your life?

Right there is a great sign. If you are telling yourself to cut back or take a break because its causing problems in your life, well obviously its fucking up your life! I mean I know a guy who does this everytime he gets stupidly drunk and does something horribly bad while drunk. He quits for a few months, or does the 'beer' only booze diet, no hard alcohol.. Classic control issue problems. A good sign that you are in trouble.

Quote:

These two crack me up. These are signs of addiction?! Haha, to me these are signs of someone trying to be more responsible and safe.

Responsible and safe? No, you are missing the point entirely. Ask why you have to cut back or stop for periods? What caused you to reach that point of decision? Likely you did something stupid when drunk, or hopefully you are realizing that your drinking is a problem and cutting back will help. Often cutting back is futile for some, but if you reach this point its often an early awareness of your problems abusing a substance.

You are taking this all way out of context, these signs are guides/warning signs that taken as a whole help you figure out what if any problem you have. Not each specific point is meant to be super analysed by a super critical person.

Quote:

Is your life increasingly chaotic and turbulent?

?! Umm my life is not chaotic or turbulent. And if yours is thanks to drug/alcohol abuse then yeah I'd say its a sure sign you have issues.

I find it very interesting to read some responses here that are full of anger towards this post. So often people with problems using substances get VERY defensive and angry when reading or hearing these things.

Interesting don't you think.

Thans Thor.

I have been thinking alot about this shit lately. I definitely have a drinking problem and am trying like hell to quit. I have not really been in denial about my problem, I just keep trying to control it as much as possible. I now understand that I have to quit. Wish me luck.

BTW, believe it or not, mushrooms have really helped me alot in this area.

Achieving ego loss and realizing your addictions and problems are much easier on mushrooms than when your in the gutter. Its good to hear that the gift of God helps people and it will continue to give people beautiful visions and realizations.

Instead of giving into addictions, put your time into something useful. Stay busy, that may be where you find the most peace.
