Re: Swami Predictions on Iraq - true, of course! [Re: Cosmopolitan]

I think you're right, although it may take quite a bit of time. A few years ago, as I recall, some moderate politicians were elected in Iran, and the "Islamic Council" called the election null and void and appointed fundies. Iran and similar countries will be stuck in the dark ages for a while yet, I suspect.....

I believe that the Iranian theocracy will probably collapse in the next decade. Alot of this will be geopolitically related to the democracy in Iraq, I imagine.

I hope so. I have an Iranian friend, and he's got some horrifying stories about those fundie nutters in power. Needless to say, he's damn glad to get out of there....

The next 50 years will probably historically define the transition of Islam as a political force into a cultural one.

1. A small portion of the populace with external assistance committing criminal acts in the presence of a weakened law enforcement capability does not constitute a civil war.

Your ignorance of the English language does not change the fact.

civil war
n.
A war between factions or regions of the same country.

Different factions are indeed killing each other. Guess you are waiting for Generals Grant and Lee and flags and forts and blue/grey uniforms and stuff...

From today's (June 2, 2005) NY Times Op Ed page "estimated number of Iraqi insurgents 16,000 of which 1,000 are foreign fighters."  If that qualifies as a civil war then the term has lost all meaning and you are just clutching at straws for the sake of being "right."  The last vestige of the wrong is the dictionary, 'eh?  That's not even a faction.  We do have gangs bigger than that.  Laughable.

By that definition the gang warfare present in America is enough to say we are in a state of civil war...

Not even close. Gang warfare is predominently about money and drugs. The Iraqi car bombings and assorted violence (which the Bush Adminstration clearly said would diminish ater the fall of Saddam, has greatly INCREASED) is about the political future of Iraq.

Are you truly unable to distinguish between profiteering and ideology?

At what point does motivation enter into the definition. The gangs are a faction and they far outnumber the insurgents. Hoist. by. petard. (type; your own)

I live in the USA and could tell some stories about "fundie nutters" in power. How many former presidents have claimed "God told me to..."

I will repeat this most difficult and overlooked question:

"Are you truly unable to distinguish between profiteering and ideology?"

Explain how street gangs are trying to change the political landscape through drive-by shootings.

How is this relevant to the question of a civil war? Do you really think the civil war in the US was fought over ideology? Do you really think the Iraq insurgent leaders are truly concerned about ideology? It's a convenient smokescreen for money and power grabs.

Quote:
2. Saddam will not be tried. As I have clearly stated after he was caught, there is too many past USA fuck-ups and CIA arms and weapons connections for him to ever be allowed to publicly speak on his behalf. IF we were SO certain about his crimes why does it take years and years? We will wait until he dies from natural causes, then say, "Well, we are just about ready to try him." If he is actually tried, it will NOT be public.

Saddam's trial date has been set for October 19, 2005 -- after the October 15 referendum on the new Iraq constitution. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/09/04/iraq.main/index.html

It is of course still possible he will never make it to trial -- someone may manage to assassinate him before then. Because of that possibility, my guess is that when Swami challenges someone to accept a bet against his prediction, he will be offering some attractive odds.
