Coca problems....HELP!
    #4612366 - 09/02/05 02:32 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I have a few small E. Cocas. The largest, which has 6 leaves and is about 4 inches tall, seemed to be thriving now has a small yellow area around the edge of the third leaf it put out. Today I checked and see that the very tip of the leaf is starting to turn brown.

Any idea on what this could be?

First thing that comes to mind is are you watering it correctly.

Second thing, small plants (ie: MJ, Coca, anything else) should never be put in direct sunlight.

Sunlight heats pots up fast, and the weak roots can't handle high heat.

I lost 8 MJ plants to putting them in direct sunlight.

And no nutes until later...

Hope this helps

Lol, she killed your cacti and you think she'll let you grow coca?

Some of my novogranatense seedlings have patches of brown, I'll get some pictures tomorrow. I thought it might even be a nute deficiency, so five of my plants have been given some camelia/rhododendron/azalea fertiliser. They should appreciate the iron. Only a small dose, and five have been left alone, so if they do get any fertiliser burn, it won't be a total disaster even if they die!

One of my seedlings dropped all but the two newest leaves, and the cotyledons are falling off some. Apparently the plants do sometimes shed their leaves, I thought it happened later, but I'm hoping that is what is happening to some of mine, and that it isn't a sign of something serious.

Can you tell me what sort of humidity levels you're giving your plants? Mine are in plastic bags so humidity is high, when I took them out to fertilise them I noticed that they wilted FAST. They recovered fine, but I'm just wondering when I can start to harden them off, because soon they'll outgrow their bags!

I also have some novo's growing. Just need to clarify those who want to grow this plant... find something else locally thats extremly hard to take car of in an indoor situation. This plant is by far NOT the "stick in ground and watch grow" plant.

with that being said.

are you using nutes on your novos?
how often do you water?
what kind of lights are you using?
what times are the lights on/off?

answer those.. and be specific and I will do my best to ensure they survive.

((my novo seeds are spoken for, please don't ask for them... as I will not send))

yeah im just going to tell her that they are something else..and like yeah i think itll be easier than her knowing that im ordering cacti seeds and growing 30 of em.. so im hoping i can get away with it.. if not.. more money down the drain.. plus it doesnt take nearly as long to grow as those damn cacti.. and im def up for the challenge of caring for 2 plants with high attention needs.. thanks

"are you using nutes on your novos?"

Half have just been given slightly under the recommended dose of some fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants. It is also high in iron, which from what I have read, is important to these plants.
Half have not been fertilised.

"how often do you water?"

So far, only twice. Once when I planted the seeds, and again while I was applying the fertiliser. Since they are in sealed bags they don't dry out much. The soil is constantly moist, but not too wet. I use rain water. Every day I open up the bags in order to get some gas exchange.
Oh, and they did get a bit of water when I treated them with cheshunt compound to prevent damping off. This is about 20% copper sulphate and about 80% ammonium bicarbonate, I used a half strength solution, and only applied enough to wet the top quarter inch or so of soil. I use this fungicide on all my plants and it has never caused problems.

"what kind of lights are you using?"

Until recently they were under standard flourescent light bulbs, roughly 40W per square foot, on a 16/8 time cycle. The lights also provided warmth - 25*C in the daytime outside the bags, so a little hotter in the bags, unknown temperature at night but probably around 20*C. But then I needed that growing space for some cacti seedlings and pereskiopsis cuttings, so the plants are now just out in the room, at about 20*C roughly and with diffuse sunlight coming in the window. But the signs of the brown patches started before I moved them. They have been in their current position for a few days now, and actually seem to be quite enjoying it.

But apart from the few plants with brown patches, they seem to be doing well. Most are developing their 5th or 6th true leaves. Anyway, I will get photos so you can see the problem - I suspect it might be the same as Chemical Bliss has - and then maybe you will be able to help.

your on probation, your mom just trashed all your cacti and your setup, but you want to grow coca?It seems you are just looking for a high without buying from a street dealer. If I were you I would wait untill I was living on my own before I tried to grow any psychoactive plant, legal or not.And I wouldnt think twice about growing anything of that sort while on probation.

Well seems I should give you all a bit mroe info on what kind of conditions they are in, sadly I dont have much time tonite I`ll add what I can and tommorow I`ll finsish it up.

And, perfectly defected, lots of luck finding seeds.....it took me almost two years and ended up spending 200 dollars for 20 fresh berries, 17 germinated but only 3 survived to this size . Also extracting the alkaloids isnt really plausible.....it takes a ton of foliage and is somewhat difficult to do for something that is done in a third world country.

And I was thinkin it might be a deficency but I always was under the impression that deficiences are pretty much unheard of with cotyledons still atatched....I havent given it anything....could this be the problem? I hear they like iron....

Also I dont really have them in a humid climate because I lost a ton of small seedlings to fungus rot in humid climates.

Also they ahve been in a pretty sunny area...I was simply putting them at different levels of sunlight until I figured out what they didnt like. I didnt see any wilting...but maybe they dont I dont know.

I had them out in pretty much direct sunlight for a week while I was away and then moved them into a less sunny area....after they were in the shady area for like 2-3 weeks, and after it put out one new leaf it started to yellow and brown. Since I moved them to the shady area they have only been getting early morning sun from like 9 until 12:30-1:00.

I really apreciate all the replys and really really hope someone can help me here....they are the most important plants in my garden and I would sacrifice all my others if these would make it.

Well, I managed to get one photo, but then my camera batteries ran out just as I was about to take a useful photo, of the affected area. So I'll get another when they're charged up again, and then everyone can see what the problem is, and Chemical Bliss might be able to say if it's the same problem...

Chemical Bliss, how old are your plants?

TO PerfectlyDefected:

So let me get this straight, you want to grow coca plants and do an extract?

So it'd be fun to manufacture cocaine?

And it'd be fun to be in prison, and it'd be fun to get your mother's home seized..

Now I KNOW why your mother doesn't trust you...

If it's not about drugs, then why have all the plant's that you have grown (and posted about) been containers of an elicit substance?

There are more plants that you can grow and do extractions...

Not bashing ya, just wondering?

And what are you on probation for?

I'm assuming drugs, or burglary of a dwelling...

I have one e novo left out of the ones I started. The stem is very floppy and never got strong. It's about 8" tall with several branches. It seems to be flowering but I don't expect any flowers. They are hard to take care of and like to die on you. This one will probably die too.

Original....wonderfully said.

I didnt even notice the post were he said "I`ll tell my mom their something else"....I deffinately dont advocate growing a shceduled plant (or fungi if that pertains to you) if the co residants (and especcially owner of the residence) do not understand the risks involved. How would you feel if your door got kicked in and not only you but your mom as well were arrested....and not only did she not do anything wrong but didnt even know there was something going on. I deffinately dont beilive folks should be growing illegal things in their parents houses without their premission.

As original, I too am deffinately not bashing you, I just think maybe you should talk to your mom about whats going on under her roof.
