" Boliviana Negra " New strain of coca plant from columbia
    #3326633 - 11/06/04 03:40 AM (12 years, 30 days ago)

Everyone knows roughly 90% of the cocaine traffic-ed through the United States comes from Colombia. The United states spends about 150 million dollars a year maintaining a fleet of crop dusters to spray roundup to kill the coca plants. The theory behind this is to kill the cocaine at its source.

Well something happened that the they did not see coming... or did they?

The spraying of roundup has seemed to kill all the coca strains but one; the farmers call it Boliviana Negra. Joshua Davis who seems to be the first American to view these plants describes it:

An entire slope of hillside vegetation has disappeared. There's only brown-gray dirt, a half-dead tree, and withered coca plants, which I recognize from photographs. "Peruviana blanca," Don Miguel says, pointing at the dead plants. "Not resistant. This slope was sprayed last year."

We hike up the ridge, and suddenly there are healthy coca plants stretching to the horizon. On one side of an imaginary line, devastation. On the other, billowing, neck-high coca plants dotting hillsides that are denuded of all other vegetation. "Boliviana negra," Don Miguel says, pointing at the large bushes. "They were sprayed as well."

This strain of coca was not proved not to be genetically engineered; it was good old natural selection. what happens when the U.S. replaces roundup with Fusarium oxysporum (a plant-killing fungus)? Maybe we will see more evolution?

Well the spraying is forcing the farmers to grow this strain. Why? the spraying is killing more then just coca plants.. Its killing all kinds of farmed vegetation. So what are the farmers doing? a lot of them are going back to the new strain of coca.
