Insurance companies are probably required to pay off claims, especially when a person's livelihood relies upon it, within a reasonable amount of time. I'm not an expert or anything but I doubt a company that relies completely on these business owners would simply neglect paying them at least enough to live off of. If they did they would surely face lawsuits and substantial losses in business. It is a service industy after all.

Dude when the insurance company is hit up with a million claims at once it could take along time to pay off. Also you have to prove all the shit that was destroyed or taken.

Shroomism. Last I heard big screen tv's and steros and shit isn't necessaties to live. Especially when the power is out. How can one talk about morals when there theiving lol.

I totally agree. People thinking about material possession at a time like that are fucking ignorant anyway. It is all about survival of the fittest. The material possessions aren't doing a god damn thing when you're starving and dehydrating.

Alot of those looters no longer have homes much less food or sanitary water. Some of the police told people to take what they need only if they would take it to another neighborhood that had no stores left. Alot of it comes out of need. Official help is not getting to everyone so I guess they have to take matters into their own hands.

The concept of anyone owning that material shit in the first place is pretty dumb.

I've already drawn the distinction between looting for survival and stealing for the sake of stealing.

You guys should clarify your positions, some of you make it sound like you'd be cleaning out the local Best Buy.

If we all agree that looting for survival is morally acceptable then there isn't much to debate. I highly doubt everyone shares this viewpoint but it seems to be the prevailing one.

Let me ask you a question Quantum. What about the man who's kids are starving who comes into your store to loot some food and bottled water? You take a shot at him and miss. In return he pulls out a gun and blows your brains all over the wall. Was it worth it?

Does it take longer than pumping dry a flooded city, then rebuilding half of it?

What kind of business could you hope to do in such an area? Do you think people are suddenly going to want to buy a DVD player a few days into a disaster like this?

Every insurance agency will have all of their agents working overtime as soon as the transportation is possible within the affected areas. In cases like this they aren't going to bother spending a ton of time on every case, they're just going to pay of the people for what they claim. If they had their agents spend enough time to meticulously check every case for extreme valididty they would end up paying them more than they were paying the business owners in the claims. Businesses are insured for a certain amount of money, and when the assessors go to investigate a claim in NO they're gonna see that most of them are essentially complete losses and they will simply pay them the maximum amount they are insured for.

I'm replying to your last grasps at self-righteousness. But seriously, did I say I owned this computer? Nope. It may seem crazy but some people don't really care that much about possessions. For the moment I only "possess" things that I need to get by until I graduate college. When I graduate, which I only care about becasue I know it will make my parents happy and I think I owe it to them, I will promply leave everything that could be construed as mine behind and venture off into the woods.

Why is it that every hippie preaches peace and love and understanding and wants to go live in the woods and shit. But their the first to steal from their fellow man? How is that peace and love?(Im not talking about taking food/water) Even if you steal from a big company you are stealing from individuals because there are people who hold stock in that company.

heres a question for you, if things go to hell and you feel that someone may try and steal what little food your family has, would it be a necisity to steal a gun? i have read about gun shops being cleared out in the area, and there are these "roaming street gangs" and shootouts with the police happening.

would stealing a gun be a within necisity?
