Did I get ripped off by Spore Trading Post?

A friend pointed me to this forum last week because of my recent purchase from Spore Trading Post.

I have read many comments about this company and how he takes advantage of new growers. I am afraid the Keeper got me too.

I watched a buddy of mine grow mushrooms from one of the Keepers kits and he did get many mushrooms from it. He felt that he got his monies worth a few times over. He traded prints for a new syringe and it did not cost my friend a dime...they (STP) even paid for shipping (the Keeper stated that this is how he stays in business w/o growing).

Will, to make a long story short, I decided to purchase one of his kits...the Ever-Last Shroom Kit for $175.00 + $25.00 credit for spores (s/h $17.50) for those who cares.



I requested the B+ (free with the credit) and received my kit in exactly 10 days (I was impressed with that).

What I received was a growing chamber with substrate jars, spores, etc.

I have been reading all over the Shroomery about how this person is ripping people off...but I must say, at least with me, he has impressed me more then I expected.

This system has a temp. controlled water incubator which runs at exactly 86F (to my understanding that is perfect) and a FULLY AUTOMATED growing chamber....which floored me!

The Humidity staid at 85% and is actually a closed unit with a small disc that allows a small amount of air through the system (I came to find out that is a HEPA Disc).

I only had to place water in the 'Humidity Water Tank' once in 2 weeks. I was able to lower the temp. to 76F by turning down the water heater to 76F (uses the same principles as the Water Incubator). It must be the combination of the humidity and the water on the outside of the Growing Chamber that keeps the temp. down because I keep my apartment temp. at 79F!


It has 'viewing' lid that seems to be professional. He even used copper screws so it would not rust.

I looked real close at the air pump (I assumed that it must be a cheap piece of shit) but it wasn't. It was actually a top of the line air pump.


Well, I will be honest with you, the shroomery is not a place to come to and get a non-bias opinion. I have read about the Keepers Brew and how it is nothing but sugar water (I could not find a link were someone has actually bought and used it). And that this company has outrageous prices on spores which is, WITHOUT A DOUBT, correct. But, on the other hand, I can trade his B+ spores for the next syringe for free. If I just keep doing that I will never have to buy spores again. So, as far as I am concerned, each syringe could cost $1000?I don?t give a shit.

I have used the kit once and did get about 5 grams of mushrooms one the first flush and 8 grams on the second (dried). I decided not to continue flushing because I still had 11 more substrate jars to go through. He claims that the kit last for a year! I have to confess that the first 2 flushes took about 3 weeks to grow. If I would have done the 3rd flush I am sure it would have been closer to a month. I got 12 jars of substrate with my kit.

I would like the members of the Shroomery to focus for just a little while and not be fucking assholes just because I want to discuss this kit. I would love to use it again, document it with pictures and let everyone see how it goes. But I will not do it if idiots come forward and start insulting and bashing me JUST BECAUSE I MENTIONED STP.

The first person that does this I will keep the findings for myself and only use this site as a resource for growing. I cannot stress how dumb some of the members are here. It is truly unbelievable how some of you can survive day by day. On the other hand, others are very forthcoming and can back their comments up with knowledge and fact. I would appreciate only those people discuss this subject with me and I will share my findings with you.

What you have posted doesn't make a lot of sense to me. But, to each his own. To answer the question in your post title, no you didn't get ripped off technically speaking. STP delivers what you order. For the prices he charges is there any wonder. Now if you had asked if you got fucked over I would think the answer should be obvious. STP is fuck over central from door to door.

Please feel free to share whatever you want to share and don't share what you don't. Just don't be a whining bitch about it.

For your next investment I recoment the $200 five gallon bucket.

honestly....(no flame intended)....you paid $217.50...for a $5 (at most) rubbermade closet bin,....$5for pvc pipe+end caps (at most), $3 vinyl tubing+plastic fittings (at most), $5 for plexiglass, $2 bux for small rubbermade airbox, $15 air pump (more/less), $1 cooper screws (at most), $7 for jars, $3 bux 4 brf., $1 for verm.

grand total: $44 bux....(at most remember)
217.50 divided by 4 = 4.94....round up = 5...
basically, you could have made 5 for the price that you paid for one..

ripped off: No, you got "something".
Burn'd: definately.

* i omitted spores cuz if you cant afford'm, there is always the FREE spore ring, and/or the spore exchange forum.

I see. Because the materials that were used did not cost him THAT MUCH MONEY I was taken for a ride.

I am not inclined, nor did I want, to spend time and energy building anything. I paid for convenience and knowledge and a lifetime supply of various spores for free (trading).

I want you to understand that I am in know way patting this person on the back for his prices...NOT AT ALL. But, the kit I received is almost 100% automated. I only had to spend a total of 45 minutes on the kit to get my first flush and 2nd. flush. Being a businessman and not having a lot of time to 'Play' like I used too, this was worth it to me.

As long as the kit does what it states AND I can trade spores with this company forever....I am going to regret saying this I am sure....but it is worth every penny to me...SO FAR...THAT IS.

I will keep everyone posted with pics and details as long as everyone plays nicely.

It looks and sounds a lot better than another expensive gadget spammed around here but for that kind of money you could have easily made your own. You'll get just as good results with just a little effort dong it all in a $2 bucket and there are lots of people here that will trade with you. You can get all sorts of different strains from around the world, not just what the 'Keeper' offers you.

But hey, if you are happy with the product and don't mind paying the price, then so be it.

That is were the humidity and filtered air is mixed. He also had me add a small amount of peroxide into the water to kill any possible water swimming contamination when I initially poured in the spring water. It kept my humidity at a constant 85-90%...24 hours a day. The only time I had to open the Growing Chamber was during the harvest.

He then had me add one cup of the ?STP Casing Soil? (it had little white crystals in some dirt and vermiculite) after I sprayed it down with a peroxide solution. He states that I could grow for several months off of one cake. It did allow me to grow an extra 8 grams or so (dried). I will be testing the longevity of one substrate 'cake' this time around!

With all due respect to YOU and MYSELF...no, I could not have done this easily myself. I do not believe you can appreciate this kit as I see it. I have been attempting to locate other sites that might offer anything even close to what I have purchased?no luck. Would someone point me to a site that does?

He also claims that the filtration system does not allow for any airborne contamination to enter during the growing stage. If anyone has a kit that can do that...please give me the link. I would like to check the price and construction of it as well.

Show me ANYTHING that one can purchase at the same cost of the materials themselves and I will buy it. A pop does not cost $3.75 (.08 cents) to serve at a movie theatre. A house does not cost 135K in materials (72K) either. I am a businessman so I understand the other side of business better than most.

I just want to make sure that I got what I paid for.

P.S. What is this ?bucket of water? I am hearing about?

can you do a write up on how this humidity and filtered air mixer works maybe some mesurements of the PVC and whats inside

as long as your happy with the product you didn't get ripped off. now that you have the whole setup, and know how it works, you can make something similar and sell it to your friends, and get some of your money back. there really all the same, they just look different

This reminds me of a job I had at a mail boxes ect. We would mark up the shipping prices from what UPS, Fedex, and USPS would charge (gotta make a profit) It cost 3.50 to ship 1 pound priority but we charged about 4.80, when people asked us how we got away with it our answer was simple...convience. We'd just point out they didn't wait in line at the post office, we packed the item for them and better then they would have, we saved them a ride into downtown and dealing with the traffic, all in all we'd save them about a half hour to ship somthing.
Basically it all comes down to how much is your time worth, was it worth it not to assemble those parts yourself? If so then no you got a great deal, if you'd rather be thrifty with your cash then yes you got ripped off.

its not about being thrifty bro...its about the pleasure and enjoyment of makin it yourself....i (many people will also agree) can spend hours n hours in walmart + homedepot just lookin at shit and conjuring up projects pertaining to this hobby left n right just by what i see....
...if you dont have time cuz yer too stuck in business....that sucks.....why have money if you cant enjoy it?
this hobby is a HOBBY....ranging from aquiring spores > sterilization > innoculation > incubation > Terrarium > birthing > fruiting > print making > etc.
in all those is a hobby in each.
so it all depends on how you look at it, you could either treat it as a hobby and do it your sellf....or pay someone else to do it, with technically cant be called a hobby....i think its called "i just want to trip" ...

so houseplant...if you bought it "just to trip", and had the $217 to care less about, then yes i guess you didnt get ripped off.

if you bought it as/for a hobby: you got ripped by your own ignorance to this hobby.

hah.. so true. i spent two hours in k-mart yesterday, only to be dissapointed when i got to home depot because it had closed four minutes before i got there :(
