Read that a couple months back. Definitely something I recommend people check out.

the past weekend i took a car trip to virginia, and so on the ride read vineland, by thomas pynchon. while there, i bought amerika by kafka, and read it on monday. now, i'm flipping between hell's angels by hunter s thompson (read it a year ago or so, but it's still very enticing), and a book of short stories of kafka's.

i like to read!

I love to read.

How did you enjoy Vineland? Have you read Pynchon's other works? I've only read The Crying of Lot 49, which was one of the wildest reads of my life!

You were referring to Teachings of Don Juan right Hella? That book seems like something you'd dig.

No, Zig Zag Zen. I've got Journey to Ixtlan, never read the other books though.

Pynchon is a maniac - I read Gravity's Rainbow a while back - very Joycean... I'd like to read it again.

I'm currently reading some ver. of the 1001 Arabian Nights, "Myth and Meaning in Early Taoism: The Theme of Chaos" by N.J. Girardot, and "Axe Handles" and "Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems" by Gary Snyder. Also slowly and occasionally reading "Faith and Practice in Islam" by Chittick, but I got a little bored so I'll have to pick it up again.

The two best novels I read this summer were "Tender is the Night" by F. Scott Fitzgerald and "War & Peace" by Tolstoy. I highly recommend both, but the former is easier to read as it isn't so gargantuan.

p.s. Beware of Castaneda - he's full of shit. His books are entertaining but just nonsensical at points (smoking mushrooms, for example). Some of that archetypal-ish imagery might be useful during trips and other spiritual endeavors, I guess. The only practices of his that I found really worthwhile were those stated in "The Art of Dreaming" - they work quite well to induce lucid dreams.

I've officially dropped Raymon Chandler's "The Big Sleep" in favor of Alex Grey's "The Mission of Art."

There is something of the quest for immortality, or at least "life extension," that fuels art. A well-made work of art will usually outlast its maker. Artists are in a race with time to try to extract from their depths a significatn body of work before they die. The fear and anger at the injustice of death cannot be underestimated as a catalyst for creation.

that's awesome!

It's sad though... most artists aren't recognized for their art in their lifetime. Alex Grey is an exception...

Vineland was damn nice. I've also read V by him, which i'd say was even better than vineland.

I agree...I don't much understand it myself. But whatever...basically what I'll do is start one book then get sidetracked by a more interesting one then continue the first one, and continue on like that.

I think I have horrible reading ADHD or something

Yeah, I end up favoring one more than the other, and end up only finishing of them. The other goes on my shelf never to be opened again.
