No problem, I treated this question quite lightly for the reasons you just posted. I was mostly enjoying a connection to the poster. I loved the Joyous Cosmology. I also like other things Watts explores. And of course I have a bias. If he had been a little more specific about some idea of Watts then I might have delved a little deeper.

I'm kind of an irreverant/frivolous guy and so sometimes people don't like it.

And Swami isn't the only one who challenges BS here. :rolleyes: :thumbup: :heart:

Anyway, thanks everyone. I didn't know he was an alcoholic, I don't think that is very surprising though.

He was pretty adamant about making it clear that he was not a guru and did not want followers. So he wouldn't have made a very good messiah.

He was very well versed in theology and particularly in eastern religion which I'm slowly learning about. I had a hard time understanding much about eastern religion until I heard him speak about it, now I have a pretty good understanding.

He's hilarious too. :grin:

Watts made eastern philosophy easy to understand and available to the west and for that alone, he should be commended.

He does get tangled up some times running around in circles, and he did talk against alcoholics in The Wisdom of Insecurity which is why him being an alcoholic runs against him. He certainly isn't a messiah or guru which he himself recognised.

Having said that, I still think he's the best speaker psychedelics I've come across (though it wasn't his focus), way ahead of the tripe Mckenna, Leary and Ram Dass had to offer.

I think it's worth noting here that reluctance is a very common reaction to be had by ANYONE being labeled a "messiah." It's very hard to step up to that kind of responsibility.

So maybe he actually would have made a good messiah.

Or, perhaps to those without an over-inflated concept of what makes a messiah, (meaning that you don't have a "must be able to do magic tricks" clause on your messiah definition) he already is.

I take them the same way I take Watts or you or myself. With a grain of salt. But I am not foolish or arrogant enough to blatantly write them off as worthless. You most likely would not be on this forum with out people like Leary and McKenna and Ram Dass and Watts.

I never said they were worthless (you implied). I just said they can't be taken seriously and that Watts made far more sense.

And for someone who supposedly 'takes them with a grain of salt,' you seem pretty quick to defend them and insult people for not agreeing with them.

I think you implied that they were worthless, and Icelander inferred from your statement that you believed they had nothing to offer.

If you disagree with what they had to say, it is possible to state "their ideas were not for me" without resorting to calling it "tripe."

Yeah ok, I called them tripe which may have implied I thought they were worthless. I know they've contributed to the promotion of psychedelic experience but some of their theories are 'tripe' in my opinion.

Personally, I think Leary and McKenna put out a lot of tripe, but I think Ram Dass was a league or two ahead of these folks, and so don't group them together.  You're right about Leary and McKenna, but Ram Dass is cool.  I'd put it like this for psychedelic people.
